  4. B. Early Japan • 1. Society was made up of Social Classes (mostly farmers) • 2. Samurai – “ Those who serve” • Loyal warriors who lived by a strict code • Lived by the code of Bushido or “The way of the warrior”

Kami – Early Japanese Spirits that live in nature • Shinto – “The Sacred way” or “The way of the gods” • Japanese Religion based on reverence of nature & ancestor worship • Legend that 1st emperor descended from the sun • Sun Goddess: Amaterasu • Some Japanese followed Buddhism (from China)

  7. C. Later Japan • 1. By the late 1400’s, the Shogunate had collapsed • 2. Last of the great unifiers: Tokugawa Ieyasu. He was a powerful daimyo who took the title of shogun in 1603. He brought a long period of peace… known as the … “Great Peace”. • 3. During this time of great peace, the first Europeans arrived • 4. By 1750, Japan began to have flourishing trade and industry.
