In April 2008, the Washington Update from the Transportation Border Working Group highlighted critical advancements in border security, travel, and trade. Effective January 31, 2008, CBP discontinued accepting oral declarations alone, maintaining wait times. Upcoming RFID infrastructure installations at 39 high-volume land ports will streamline processes, provide data to law enforcement, and reduce processing time. With $339M earmarked for modernization and additional funding on the horizon, significant improvements in staffing and technology are set to enhance the security and efficiency of America's ports of entry.

Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative • Effective January 31, 2008, CBP is no longer accepting oral declarations alone. • No discernable impact to wait times. • This summer CBP will begin installing RFID infrastructure at 39 high-volume land ports, which process 95% of crossings. • Vicinity RFID technology will provide CBP officers traveler and law enforcement information in advance of arrival at primary booth. • Reduced processing time • More secure process
