  4. Journal entry If you wake up at a different time, in a different place, could you wake up as a different person? • For Jonathan, this is not possible, as we see in Chapter 9 • He has frequent flashbacks to life with his father

  5. Plot summary • Chapter 9 takes place in two settings • Vista Heights and Jonathan’s memory

  6. Setting #1: Vista Heights • Mr. Roberts presents Jonathan with his test results • He shows him his strengths and areas in need of improvement • Strong in reading and problem solving • He will have to stay after school with Tommy to work on math • Jonathan admits to “almost liking” Mr. Roberts

  7. Setting #2: Jonathan’s memory • He describes his father’s way of winning over or frightening his teachers • He had one teacher, Mr. Crozier, fired • Memories of Jonathan’s life with his father include • Losing rent money in poker games • Helping his father escape from the police • Lying to the police about his identity • Staying in foster homes until his father would come for him

I must admit I really enjoy solving a good mystery.” • Mr. Roberts is dedicated to Jonathan’s learning • He is also interested in Jonathan’s past

  10. Character development – Jonathan’s father • What more do we learn about Jonathan’s father in this chapter? “He would say that he didn’t know if I had enough guys to be a good con man. I thought maybe my problem was the complete opposite. I had too many guts…” • Jonathan’s father used him to further his own scams • He would often leave him on his own as a child
