  2. Assessment Plan • is made up of an assessment timeline and table assessment strategies.

  3. Step 1 • Set up project- provide project plan, checklists and reflection prompts to help guide students through the process of setting up and carrying out projects. Students use journals, or K-W-L-H charts to reflect on how they learn to set goals for the upcoming unit.

  4. Step 2 • Tap prior knowledge- use graphic organizers, brainstorming, questioning, writing, and discussions prior to instruction to assess students’ background experiences, skills, attitudes, and misconceptions. Students use these methods to make connection between what they already know and what they will be learning.

  5. Step 3 • Set expectations- Review the project rubric that defines the criteria for assessment. Get feedback on expectations, answer any question, and consider adjusting criteria based on students’ output.

  6. Step 4 • Check for understanding- use several strategies to collect information about student processes and concept acquisition throughout the unit. These include journals, anecdotal notes, questioning, conferences, peer feedback and performance assessments. Provide feedback based on the information gathered to address misconceptions and other learning issues appropriately.

  7. Step 5 • Monitoring Progress- Use checklists, learning logs, reflections, conferences, and project plans to help students stay on track during a project. These strategies allow students to self-manage as they complete open-ended tasks.

  8. Step 6 • Encourage collaboration- Model questioning strategies, and use observation checklists and anecdotal notes to monitor group processes. Provide students with questionnaires, checklists, rubrics and prompts.

  9. Step 7 • Promote Self and Peer Assessment- effective methods for promoting self and peer assessment include checklists, rubrics, and journal prompts. Peer assessment is an important step toward self- assessment, a critical skill for self-direction.

  10. Step 8 • Demonstrate learning – It is usually at the end of the unit. Students can use rubrics, scoring guide, portfolios and student-led conferences.

  11. Step 9 • Reflect and set goals – includes journal prompts, checklists, rubrics and project plans.
