  1. Net Ionics Tutorial II

  2. General Information • Chemical equation in which only those ions undergoing chemical changes in the course of the reaction are represented • There is always a conservation of charge as well as mass in a balanced chemical equation.

  3. Different Reactions • Exchange Reactions • Precipitation Reactions • Gas-Forming Reactions • Acid-Base Reactions

  4. Exchange Reaction • Metathesis or double displacement reactions • Interchange of reactant cation/anion partners • AB + XY AY + XB

  5. Precipitation Reactions • Produce an insoluble precipitate from soluble reactants. • Cu(No3) 2(aq) + (NH4 )2S(aq) CuS(s) + 2 NH4NO3(aq) • Cu+2 (aq) + S-2 (aq) CuS(s)

  6. Gas Forming Reactions • Exchange reaction occurring between metal carbonates and acids. • CuCO3(s) + 2 HNO3(aq) Cu(NO3)2(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l) • CuCo3(s) + 2 H3O+(aq) Cu+2 (aq) + CO2(g) + 3 H2O(l)

  7. Acid Base Reactions • An exchange reaction between an acid and a base produces a salt, and usually, water. • NaOH(aq) + HCl(aq) NaCl(aq) + HOH(l)

  8. Now that you know a little about Net Ionic Equations and how they work, lets start! • Mix lead(II) nitrate with hydrochloric acid to form lead(II) chloride and nitric acid

  9. Pb(NO3)2 (aq) + 2 HCl (aq) PbCl2 (s) + 2 HNO3 (aq) Pb(NO2)3 (aq) + 2 HCl (aq) Pb2Cl2 (s) + 3 HNO3 (aq) Which equation is correct? • Pb(NO2)3 (aq) + 2 HCl (aq) PbCl2 (s) + 2 HNO3 (aq)

  10. Incorrect!

  11. Put this equation in dissociated form. Correct! Pb(NO3)2 (aq) + 2HCl(aq)       PbCl2 (s) + 2HNO3 (aq)

  12. Which one is the correct Dissociated form? Pb2+(aq) + 2 NO3-(aq) + 2 H+(aq) + 2 Cl-(aq) PbCl2 (s) + 2 H+(aq) + 2 NO3-(aq) Pb2+(aq) + 2 NO3-2(aq) + 1 H+(aq) + 2 Cl-(aq) PbCl3 (s) + 2 H+(aq) + 2 NO3-(aq) Pb2-(aq) + 2 NO3-(aq) + 2 H+(aq) + 3 Cl-(aq) PbCl2 (s) + 2 H+(aq) + 2 NO4-(aq)

  13. Wrong!!!!!

  14. Great Job! Pb2+(aq) + 2 NO3-(aq) + 2 H+(aq) + 2 Cl-(aq) PbCl2 (s) + 2 H+(aq) + 2 NO3-(aq) Next, cancel out the ions that are not needed in the reaction.

  15. Which equation correctly cancels out the unneeded ions? Pb2+(aq) + 2 Cl-(aq) PbCl2 (s) Pb3+(aq) + 1 Cl-(aq) PbCl3 (s) Pb2+(aq) + 3 Cl-(aq) PbCl3 (s)

  16. Nope!

  17. Yea! You Did It!
