VVMS Vanderbilt Pre-Veterinary Medicine Society
General Prerequisites • Pre-vet students must take the same general prerequisites as pre-med students • Two semesters of: • General Chemistry • Organic Chemistry • Introductory Biology • Physics • Including labs
Additional Prerequisites • In addition, many vet schools may require some combination of the following: • Genetics • Microbiology • Biochemistry • Cellular Biology • Animal Nutrition • Calculus or statistics • Humanities and social sciences • English composition
Shadowing • Experience is absolutely necessary for veterinary school applications • You need to spend time in a veterinary hospital or similar setting in the presence of a veterinarian • 400 hours is a good number to aim for as a minimum • Average number of hours for admitted students usually above 1000 • Hours not in the presence of a veterinarian can be counted as “animal experience” hours
GRE • The GRE is also required for admission to vet school • Thankfully, the MCAT is not required, but is accepted at some schools • If anyone is interested, we can schedule a presentation from Kaplan about test prep
How VVMS can help! • Advice from your peers on which classes to take, when, and with which professors • Meetings with admissions officers • Volunteering at the humane society • Partnering with VPAWS • Touring the zoo • Visit to a dairy farm • Mock interview questions
