The Fulbright Program, initiated in 1946 by U.S. Congress, aims to foster mutual understanding between the U.S. and other nations through educational exchanges. Administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE), this prestigious program offers two types of grants to U.S. students: Full Grants for independent research or study, and English Teaching Assistantships (ETAs). With over 1,800 awards available across approximately 150 countries, Fulbright provides opportunities for transformative cultural experiences and academic advancement. General • New list of countries where dual citizenship makes one ineligible to apply • Expanded list of countries where presence in country in 2013 makes one ineligible for 2014-15 (not study abroad) • Same-sex benefits • Previous Fulbright grant eligiblity
Near East & Africa Near East & North Africa Sub-Saharan Africa • ETA: Bahrain, Jordan, Morocco, and Oman • Gulf Countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, United Arab Emirates) tend to be undersubscribed • Critical Language Enhancement Awards: anticipated for study/research in Egypt / Jordan / Morocco. • All Awards now 9 months in duration • ETA:Available in Kenya, Rwanda, Senegal, and South Africa • Field: Most countries welcome candidates in a wide range of fields • South Africa: Candidates may want to consider less-competitive countries (Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana)
East Asia / Pacific • Malaysia: ETA program expected to offer at least 75 awards • Australia:CSIRO award (undersubscribed), ANU Business Grants • Additional Study/Research Awards: Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia, New Zealand, Thailand, Philippines • Laos: Expected to offer more ETA Awards • ETAs (All Countries): No side research projects
South & Central Asia / Germany South & Central Asia Germany • India: ETAs to New Delhi, Calcutta, and Chennai • Nepal: ETA is a homestay only • Turkmenistan: New ETA program (2 grants) • Applicants must exemplify maturity & flexibility • Highly recommended to have some background in the local language & culture before applying • Language: Essential, esp. for ETA’s and Full Grants in the fields of German studies, philosophy, language & literature • Affiliation: Letter of invitation important • Project: Master’s degree seekers welcome • All Study/Research Grantees: Will be matriculated (official affiliation) with a university • Dual Citizens (U.S./Germany) ineligible • Applicants in the ARTS will have different instructions than worldwide applicants in the Arts

Special Award Opportunities Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship Fulbright-mtvU Award • Professional placements in foreign government ministries • Placement is ~32 hrs/wk, independent project is ~8 hrs/wk • Requires language fluency and additional essays • Master’s, JD, or enrolled in PhD • Participating countries will be announced in November 2013.
