  2. History • Medicine taught for over 500 years • Partnership implicit with NHS • Open door to medical library resources since 1970’s • Long-standing LIS service to medical staff • Access widened to all health practitioners in Grampian • Approx 14,000 extra potential library users

  3. Direct NHS involvement • Long-standing informal links with GUHT and GHB • Becoming formalised into SLAs • AU/GPCT Service Level Agreement since 1995 • Recognised benefits to both parties • Negotiation of SLAs • awareness of detailed costing issues • value for money: funding constraints

  4. NHS requirements • Nuances of differing service requirements • Different ethos: self reliance v. service dependent • Building bridges with senior managers • Different national provision, e.g. NHSiS CLA licence, NELH

  5. Legal requirements • 1997 SLIC consultation re LIS for NHSiS • Local discussions re widening access • 1998 SLIC ‘Enabling Access to the Knowledge Base of Healthcare’ • Local collaboration started to grow • MEL (2000)11

  6. MEL (2000)11 “…Health Boards and Trusts will be expected to ensure that within 5 years all staff groups in the NHS in Scotland have ready access to comprehensive and improved library and information services designed and resourced to meet their learning needs.” FromLearning Together, 1999

  7. NHS/AU involvement • AU and GPCT joint catalogue • AU and GPCT joint membership • LIS staff employed by AU, based at GPCT • 1990’s proliferation of e-resources • Wide variance in NHS access to e-resources and ability to use

  8. LIS Teaching at AU • AU LIS teaching programme evolved from late 1970’s • Mainly undergrads, also postgraduates and PhDs • Academic staff, but sensitively grouped (!) • NHS staff

  9. Teaching for the NHS • Structured sessions for GPCT staff for last 5 years • Ad-hoc sessions for GUHT staff, e.g. A&E, radiographers • Shared training - Cochrane Library • NHSiS deal - major training requirements • Presentations at NHS training conferences
