  1. Mrs. King’s Trip to the Rainforest 2008

  2. Central America Our trip took us to Costa Rica or “Rich Cost” in Spanish.

  3. Rainforest Facts Rainforests receive more than 70 inches of rain a year. More than half of the world's estimated 10 million species of plants, animals and insects live in the tropical rainforests. Rainforests once covered 14% of the earth's land surface; now they cover a mere 6% and experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years. At least 80% of the world's diet originated in the tropical rainforest. Its bountiful gifts to the world include fruits like avocados, coconuts, figs, oranges, lemons, grapefruit, bananas, guavas, pineapples, mangos and tomatoes; vegetables including corn, potatoes, rice, winter squash and yams; spices like black pepper, cayenne, chocolate, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, sugar cane, tumeric, coffee and vanilla and nuts including Brazil nuts and cashews

  4. Losing the Rainforests The Disappearing Rainforests We are losing Earth's greatest biological treasures just as we are beginning to appreciate their true value. One and one-half acres of rainforest are lost every second with sad consequences for all countries. Rainforests are being destroyed because the value of rainforest land is seen as important for lumber and more space to build. Nearly half of the world's species of plants, animals and microorganisms will be destroyed or severely threatened over the next 25 years because rainforests are being destroyed. Experts estimates that we are losing 137 plant, animal and insect species every single day due to rainforest deforestation.

  5. Zipline Trip Monkeys 1 & 2 and Mr. King get ready to “zipline”! First a strong harness and metal clip are put on each person. Then they are given a helmet and gloves for protection. Now they are ready to hike to the zipline platform.

  6. Hiking on the Suspension Bridge Climbing to heights of 1,000 feet, the group prepares to zip over the rainforest on strong metal cables or wires!

  7. And away he goes……..!!!

  8. Travelling through the rainforest layers Can you find the tram that we boarded to travel through the rainforest layers? Let’s name the layers: The top is the Emergent Layer. Next is the Canopy. Then the thick middle is the Understory. Near the ground, we find the Forest Floor. It is very dark there.

  9. Mrs. King’s favorite The Sloth is a very slow moving Rainforest animal. It moves about an inch an hour. It usually stays in trees all day. Look at Mrs. King holding mother sloth and her baby!

  10. A Sloth in the Rainforest Looking through a telescope Can you still see it?

  11. Treasures of the Rainforest Bananas and Chocolate, Oh My!! This is a banana flower. This is a banana plantation. The blue bags protect each bunch.

  12. The Grand Finale! We ended the trip with parasailing. What a rush. Can you find Mrs. King?
