  1. Welcome to Curriculum Night 2011-2012

  2. Walk through a day in your child’s life at school!

  3. Arrival/”Sem”bly *7:30 – 7:40 students line up in cafe’ *Unpack backpacks *Put folders in the appropriate places *Start the day with journals/morning work. *Announcements

  4. Calendar Time/Movement *Calendar *Review and reinforce math concepts: patterns, graphing, fractions, adding, counting. *Morning message *Movement songs to stretch bodies and reinforce language skills.

  5. Reader’s Workshop *Shared reading – Teacher models strategies of successful readers. *Literacy centers – students will practice learned skills independently in literacy centers. *Guided reading – Teacher pulls small groups for individualized reading instruction. *Word analysis and Phonics – students will learn letter sounds and word chunks to help decode words.

  6. Lunch *Prepay online or in the morning before school starts. *When you come to eat with your child please sit at the visitors table. * You may bring food for your child only. Students will *Practice opening packages. *Practice table manners.

  7. Science/Social Studies • Science- daily, and Social Studies- integrated • Required Science Lessons • *Use themes to teach concepts (i.e., pumpkins, Texas, etc.)

  8. Specials 12:10 – 1:00The specials calendar is in the back of your child’s daily folder. Please make sure your child wears sneakers on PE days! Computer Art Music P.E.

  9. Math *Math journals *Whole group activities *Small groups *Math Stations *Problem solving *Assessment

  10. Writer’s Workshop *Shared writing *Journal writing *Students are encouraged to manipulate and use individual sounds they have learned. *Students conference with the teacher on their writing.

  11. Snack/Class MeetingDismissal *Send in one nutritious snack everyday (labeled with your child’s name). *Please only send a pop-up top water bottle. *Revisit the day’s activities. *Discuss any issues that we are having in class. *Students are responsible to pack up their own backpacks.

  12. Discipline *Daily folders contain behavior/expectation sheets. Please check your child’s folder and talk with your child daily about their behavior. *If you have any questions, please call or email your child’s teacher.

  13. Homework *Homework will go home on Mondays. Please complete the homework with your child and return it to school on Friday. *The homework sent home is meant for review purposes that covers what we have learned in class.

  14. Sembly2011-12 Monday Mornings— -Pledge of Allegiance -Texas Pledge -Today Pledge -Bully Pledge -Moment of Silence -Specials Awards -Movement Friday Afternoon (last Friday of the month only)— -Birthdays for the month -Movement -Other celebrations

  15. This year at Sem we will be bucket fillers! Each classroom will have a bucket for students to fill with positive messages.

  16. Character at Sem Honor Medals Each student at Sem will receive a chain to hold small plastic charms or “Honor Medals”. Throughout the school year, your child will be given medals to add to their chain. Students can also earn medals to add to their chain! Medals will be given out for a variety of things: Red Ribbon Week, Respect, No Bullying, Kindness………the list goes on and on!!

  18. Volunteer Opportunities • Many opportunities are available for you. • You must have a background check before you volunteer. Please check the Frisco ISD website to print out the background check form.

  19. Sem Watch D.O.G.S Join us September 16th 6:30pm!

  20. Sem Watch D.O.G.S. Sem is looking for positive male role models that will influence the lives of students on our campus. We welcome all dads, grandfathers, uncles or other male role models! Please join us September 16th at 6:30 for information and pizza to learn how you can take part. Be a Hero!
