  1. Solar Flares Emily Linden Bear Elder

  2. What is a Solar Flare? • An enormous amount of energy being released • Takes a matter of minutes to explode over a space • Some piece of materials breaks free and escapes into space • Occurs when hot gas breaks free • Magnetic field causes the flares to be contained in its area • So energetic they are linked to bombs

  3. Solar Flares Sunspot X and M are ratings for the Solar Flares Taken in ultraviolet rays to show flares and sunspots

  4. Flare hit Earth’s Magnetic Field • CME (coronal mass ejection) seen • Shown how far the flare reached out • Taken on April 11 2013 • The flare hit the Earths Magnetic Field • Only aurora seen • Fast protons and charged particles from the sun travel toward Earth, sometimes in the wake of a solar flare.

  5. CME (Coronal Mass Ejection • A massive burst of solar wind and magnetic fields rising above the solar corona or being released into space. CME (coronal mass ejection)

  6. Videos on Solar Flares • http://www.space.com/23323-powerful-solar-flare-seen-in-spectacular-close-up-video.html (An M9-class eruption lofted a faint coronal mass ejection towards Earth on Oct. 24th, 2013. ) • http://on.aol.com/video/raw-video--nasa-captures-dramatic-solar-flare-517336010(A solar flare erupted along the sun's left side on Monday. The flare was recorded by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory spacecraft, which is part of a 5-year mission focused on the sun. (April 16) • http://on.aol.com/video/raw-video--nasa-captures-dramatic-solar-flare-517336010(NASA calls it an X-Class solar flare, one of the most powerful to have erupted from the Sun this year. The flare was accompanied by a coronal mass ejectionon July 11.) • http://on.aol.com/video/raw-video--nasa-captures-dramatic-solar-flare-517336010 (Thursday's flare was the latest in a series of solar eruptions captured by NASA's orbiting Solar Dynamics Observatory. Classified as a moderate M class flare it lasted for about 45 minutes, ejecting billions of charged particles into space in a coronal mass ejection on October 24.)
