School Discipline • Nathan Davis, Dean of Students • In charge of student services, including discipline • School philosophy: • Kids being kids, they will make mistakes. We have high expectations for student behavior, but when students do not meet those standards it becomes a learning opportunity just like in the classroom. • Consequences are given to correct behavior, not punish.
Consequences • Meeting with the dean/principal • Calls home • Volunteer work • Detention • Lunch • Morning • Afternoon • Loss of privileges • Parent Conference • Wednesday Schools • Extended detention from 4-6 p.m. • Suspensions • In-school • Out-of-school • Expulsion
Reckless Disregard • I should know better than to engage in reckless behavior, but I do anyway. Something bad happens. It is still my fault. • Running in the hallways • Throwing objects • Rough horseplay, etc. • Not malicious in nature • Lack of thinking
Warning Signs • Patterns of behavior that continue even with intervention or increase in frequency and severity • Self-harming behavior • Not just physical • Drastic, unexplained changes in mood/behavior
