  2. Royal Canadian Navy • only 13 ships and 1819 sailors at start of war • massive building and training program

  3. Battle of the Atlantic • Britain dependent on supplies and food from Canada and US • unable to invade Britain, Germany uses wolf packs of U boats to cut off supplies to Britain • merchant marines sail in convoys protected by warship • Canada builds a small warship called a corvette to escort convoys

  4. Allies Gain upper hand • German submarines continue sinking ships at rapid pace until winter of 42/43 until: • German naval code broken • more ships built than destroyed • better training of RCN personnel and equipment • long range liberator bombers

  5. Royal Canadian Navy • by 1946 Canada has 400 vessels and 100 000 sailors

  6. War Technology • radar, rockets, jet planes, synthetic products, medical technology and ultimately the atomic bomb

  7. Royal Canadian Air Force • 250 000 Canadians join RCAF • participate in bombing raids in Britain, North Africa, Italy, and South East Asia and nigh bombings of Grmany • casualty rates are high as 100 000 loose lives • women serve RCAF in support roles
