  10. At What Age Does Obesity Become A Concern? • There is no true answer • “ Life long effects on an individuals pattern of genetic expression and therefore on the tendency to develop obesity and certain diseases.”

Is a Plump Infant Ever Obese? • Gaining weight begins early (even in the womb) • In fact, babies with the highest body mass index or those who gained the most weight during their first two years were more prone to be obese at every stage of their lives -- child to adult -- than those of a normal weight.

  12. Your Child May Suffer From Obesity if: • Early size • Early body fat • High birth weight • Having obese parents • Quick growth from ages 1-2 • Watching more than eight hours of TV a week • Getting less than 10.5 hours of sleep at night

  13. When Baby Fat Becomes Obesity • “Baby Fat” becomes obesity when the child’s BMI is in the obesity range • It is easier to prevent obesity than treat obesity • A natural prevention is breast feeding the child

Proper Portion Sizes • 1 tsp. of salad dressing = size of a half dollar • 1/2 tap. of oil = one thimble full • Medium baked potato = computer mouse • 1/2 cup of vegetables = bulb part of a standard light bulb • 1 cup of pasta = baseball • 3 oz. of meat = deck of cards • 1oz of cheese = 2 dominoes or your thumb • pancake/ waffle = diameter of a CD • 1 cup of dry cereal = wine glass • 1 oz of chocolate = package of dental floss

  20. Help Control Portions at Home and at Restaurants • Avoid eating in front of TV • Eat breakfast •  Pay attention •  Enjoy smell and taste •  Eat Slowly • Take seconds of Vegetables •  Get the small size •  Ask for half to be wrapped up • Have salad instead of loaded baked potato

  23. What can we do to prevent this? • Speak with our children on what foods are healthy and those that are not. • Encourage spending time outside to burn off calories.

What can we do to prevent this? • Children's One Step Ahead Program: developed by the Children's Hospital Primary Care Center • Strives to direct children to nutritional plans and physical activity opportunities both at home and the community. • Helps prevent overweight children from progressing to obesity. • In this program 4 different people help adjust to the program. > A Doctor > A Nutritionist > A Social Worker > An Exercise/Physical Activity Coach
