Why do we preserve food? • We preserve food because that way the food wont be broken down, and can be exported to different cities or countries around the world.
What ways can we preserve food? • Freezing • Preservatives • Canning • Salting • Dehydration
Freezing • Freezing is one of the most common ways to preserve food, you simply put your food in the freezer and bacterias wont break down your food as bacterias prefer warmer climates than colder climates.
Preservatives • Usually before your food is in the market, chemical preservatives will be added into your food which will act as a barrier towards bacteria and will not allow them to effect your food.
Canning • You sometimes can get tinned or canned food which have no oxygen in them at all, which basically means life can not exist in that tin or can.
Salting • You also sometimes get salt on your food to protect it. The reason for salt being a great source to fend off bacteria is because salt is at a great hypertonic level which pathogenic organisms can’t survive in.
Dehydration • Foods sometimes get water sucked out of it and resulting in dry and sometimes hot air being circulating around the food, which of course, pathogens completely dislike.
History of preserving #1 • The history of preserving food dates back to 1795 in France where there was tinned beans and fruits. France was involved in war and so the french government offered 12, 000 francs to whoever could find a way of preserving food.
