    3. What is Noh Theater? Noh theater is a form of theater that uses masks to portray characters and emotions. Only the main actor, or shite, and his companions, or tsure, wear masks. The masks may portray anything from a woman to a lion god. Like Kabuki theater, the actors are all men, so the shite wears a mask unless his character is an adult male.

    4. What is Noh Theater? (cont.) Noh was established during the Muromachi period (1336-1573) by actors Kanami Kiyotsugu and his son, Zeami Motokiyo. It is usually set in a place in nature, with some real trees and some fake in the background. There are usually very few characters in one play.

    5. What are Noh Theater Masks? Noh masks are very detailed and there is a wide variety of them. Each mask represents a character, and each character has a name. For example, this character is Hannya, a woman who was turned into a demon by jealousy and frustration.

    6. Masks (cont.) Each character is divided into a category. There are humans, with men and women, spirits, gods, and demons. Koomote here is a female human.

    7. Mask Perception Because the masks are made of wood and are rigid, actors can not manipulate them to show expression. Instead, they must use the effects of light and shadow. The following pages show how this is done.

    10. How are Noh Masks Made? Each mask is made carefully, and it can take an expert mask maker anywhere from three weeks to two months to make one mask. They are carved from a block of wood, beginning with basic shape, then basic details, and advanced details. They are then painted with five layers of paint and a gloss made of gesso and glue. The eyes, teeth, and horns are inlaid with bronze, and only small holes are left for seeing and breathing.

    13. How is Noh Theater Connected to Zen? Noh Theater has two aesthetic principles. 1. Monomane- The imitation of things. 2. Yugen- A Zen influenced idea of the mystery and depth of all things. Because of these, Zen plays are generally mysterious and only hint at a message
