  3. The first subculture appeared in Russia in 1970-s. Since that time millions of young people started to join youth groups. Somebody wears heavy boots and listens to hard rock, others like travelling and bard’s songs. To join or not to join? That is the question! And we decided to know what a subculture is and should teenagers join any of them.

Why do teens join subcultures? • To show off – 21% • To protests against the older generation – 10% • To be in a collective – 13% • To express their own identity - 28% • To find friends and adherents - 28% We have interviewed young people at the age from 14 till 22.Here are our results: Do you belong to any subculture? Subculture –is it good or bad? • It’s cool! – 25% • It’s an interesting phenomenon, but I never wanted to join – 62,5% • It doesn’t matter – 7,5% • It's a waste of time – 5% • Yes – 47% • No – 50% • I’d like to join one of them – 3%

First they only tried to copy clothes of western hippies and listened to the same music – songs of John Lennon, Jim Morrison, etc. Freedom and traveling wasn’t possible. But nowadays Russian hippies don’t differ from hippies in other countries – they have long hair tied with a bit of string, wear brightly clothes, bracelets and round sunglasses. Hippies protect environment, propagandize love and pacifism, rebel against a nucleus war. But on the other hand, hippies often become drug users and think that it isn’t dangerous.   6. PUNKS Punk-subculture in the Soviet Union was born in 1979 when the group “Automatic Satisfiers” was created. Andrey Panov (“Pig”) was the leader of the group. Russian punks didn’t make “mohawks”, but drinking alcohol, smoking and using drugs were the similar points of our punks and punks from abroad. The Soviet punks rebelled against imposition of ideals, the soviet society, all social norms. HOY!!! Exotic colors of mohawks – specific hairstyles – are typical for punks.

  8. METALHEADS Punks were the ancestors of many different subcultures: goths, emo, ska, etc. But the next subculture which appeared in the USSR was metalheads. In 1980-s first heavy-metal groups appeared in Moscow. They were “Aria”, “Master”, “Black Coffee”, “Corrosion of the Metal” and others. Aria Master Black Coffee Corrosion of the Metal

  9. Not all metalheads are dressed in the “metal” style, some of them prefer usual clothes, their identify with subculture is shown in listening to respective music. Metalheads haven’t an ideology but they propagandize liberty and independence. Fantasy is a popular literarygenre among metalheads. Metalheads are accepted one of the most “intellectual” subcultures. Metalheads aren’t associated with using drugs, but they are thought to drink alcohol (beer). • Long hair • Leather jacket • Black T-shirt with logotype of favorite group • Studdedbelts, wristbands, chains • Army boots • Leather trousers or jeans

  10. The subculture of metalheads is closely connected with the bikers’ subculture. There are many people among metalheads who like motorbikes and a majority of bikers prefer to listen heavy-metal. Besides, metal-groups tell about bikers’ boldnessand liberty in their songs. To be a biker is romantic. “Wild wind, noise of roads – and you are free!” BIKERS Bikers have their own “states”with it’s own code (rules),hierarchy, president, vice president,treasurer and others.First bikers appearedin the USSR in 1980-s.The first motorbike clubwas “Night Wolves”. Their leader is “The Surgeon”–Alexander Zaldostanov.

  12. In 1990-s the first goths began walking down the streets of our country. Usual people were shocked when they met gloomy guys on cemeteries and near monuments. Goths dress eccentric clothes, prefer black and scarlet, rarely white colors. They like shirts with flounces and ruches. Girls wear long dresses, corsets. Goths have bleached faces and long black hair. Actually dark clothes hides the romantic persons who are talented in writing verses, drawing or philosophy. But their romance is rather original – goths are attracted by the theme of death. “Agatha Christie” – probably, the first Russian gothic band.

  13. EMO Emo-boys and girls appeared in Russia in 2010-s. Emo has been associated with a stereotype that includes being particularly emotional, sensitive, shyor angst-ridden. It has also been associated with depression, self-injury and suicide. Emo like bright T-shirts, tight jeans, gym shoes, studded belts, bracelets, badges, Teddy bears, “Hello Kitty” and so on. Besides, the emo’s distinguishing feature is their long fringes colored with blue, pink or purple. One of the first Russian emo band

  15. The first event associated with the appearance of rap in the USSR took place in the city of Kuibyshev (now Samara). In 1984 DJ of a student disco club "Canon" Alexander Astrov with a local group "Rush Hour” recorded a 25-minute program, which soon spread throughout the country as an album "Rap". The album was recorded under the influence of the band's albums Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five and Captain Sensible. Rappers Most of rappers wear jeans, «pipes» and tightshirts or sport shirts (hockey or basketball). Caps, baseball caps are turned back, backpacks to belts, chains, sport jackets, shirts are the "gadgets"of a young rapper. Special attentionis given to ornaments.

  17. There are a lot of good and bad points in different subcultures. Some teens join subcultures, because they want to show off, some teens want to find new friends, others think that any subculture is a waste of time. So, we think that subculture is choice for everybody.
