  3. Type of Website: Advocacy • Supports a position on a moral, ethical, or social issue. • Attempts to influence public opinion • Address may end in .org • Examples: • National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League • The Democratic Party

  4. Type of Website: Commercial • Sponsored by a for profit business or marketing enterprise • Tries to promote or sell a product or service • Address may end in .com • Examples • Dell Computers • Pepsi Co. • Barnes and Noble Booksellers, Inc.

  5. Type of Website: Informational • Purpose is to present factual information such as data, research and statistics • Web address usually ends in .edu or .gov • Examples: • GTCC • United States Congress • Department of Health and Human Services

  6. Type of Website: News • Primary purpose is to provide extremely current information on local, regional, national, and international events. • Web address usually ends with .com • Examples: • WXII • Greensboro News & Record • CNN

  7. Type of Website: Personal • Published by an individual who may or may not be affiliated with a larger institution. • Showcase the person’s interests; provides favorite links • Web address has a variety of endings but often includes a tilde • Example: • (not a real address) www.gtcc.edu/~amwebb

  8. Type of Website: Entertainment • Web site that provides entertainment such as humor, games, music, drama, etc. • Web address has a variety of endings usually .com, .net • Examples: • The Onion • BoomBox.net • Internet Movie Database

  9. Type of Website: Advertisement/Webfomercial • Usually banners, hyperlinks, or pop up windows

  10. Type of Website: Discussion Group • Web sites that include chat rooms, discussion groups, listservs. • Examples: • Yahoo! • Facebook • Myspace
