Everyday Discipleship • “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Lk. 9:23). • A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master…” (Mt. 10:24, 25a). • “You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you” (Jn. 13:13-15).

  3. The essence of discipleship is embracing and emulating the example of Jesus.

Everyday Discipleship “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a servant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross” (Phil. 2:5-8).

Everyday Discipleship • “Let this mind be in you…” • Phroneolit. “think this in you” present tense, active voice, imperative mood. • In the case of the disciple the singular intent of his heart’s desire is to exercise his mind and the affections for the purposes of Jesus Christ. • The orientation of the disciple of Jesus is to “set his mind” to think like his Lord. • Mt. 16:21-23 • Rom. 8:5 • Phil. 3:2

Everyday Discipleship • “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus” • “Make your own attitude that of Christ Jesus” • “Let your attitude of life be that of Jesus” • “The attitude you should have is the one that Jesus had” • “Let Christ Jesus be your example as to what your attitude should be” • Think just as Christ Jesus thought” • “Let this same attitude and purpose and mind be in you” • Have the same thought among yourselves as you have in communion with Christ Jesus” • “Reflect in your own minds the mind of Christ”

Everyday Discipleship • Jesus is Lord • Paul describes the nature of the Jesus so that we might understand what it means to “Have the mind of Christ.” • Jesus Christ possessed the essence of God's nature from all eternity. • Jesus “being in the form of God”, huparcho, “to be present” “to exist.” Morphe, “nature” or “unaltered character” • Jn. 1:1; 8:56-59; Col. 1:15-17; Heb. 1:3

Everyday Discipleship What Jesus Did • Whatever governs our thoughts governs the direction of our lives. • Jesus was not directed by His deity; it was not His divine prerogatives that He pointed too, nor was it his glorious majesty that He was motivated by. • Jesus did not regard (esteem) His deity something to hold on to at all cost. He surrendered the throne and picked up a cross. • Mt. 20:20-28; Rom. 15:3

  9. Everyday Discipleship What is the mind of Christ? • The Greek word kenoo or kenosis means “emptying” or “to render void privileges.” • The Lord’s focus was not on what he was giving up but what he wasreceiving. • 2Cor. 8:9 • Heb. 12:3 • Jn. 17:1-5

  10. Everyday Discipleship What is the mind of Christ? • He took “the form of a servant” came in the “likeness of men” and “was found in the appearance as a man,” all of these speak to the self-emptying and self-abasement of Jesus. • Rom. 8:3 • Heb. 2:14,17; 10:5 • Jn. 1:14

  11. Everyday Discipleship What is the mind of Christ? • The word “humbled” means to be reduced to a lower condition. • The humiliation of Jesus was completed at the cross. • Heb. 5:7-9 • Mt. 26:36-42 • Isa. 50:5-6 • 2Cor. 5:21 • Mt. 27:46

Everyday Discipleship • "Though existing before the worlds in the Eternal Godhead, yet he did not cling with avidity to the prerogatives of divine majesty, did not ambitiously display his equality with God; but divested himself of the glories of heaven, and took upon him the nature of a servant, assuming the likeness of men. Nor was this all. Having thus appeared among men in the fashion of a man, he humbled himself yet more, and carried out his obedience even to dying. Nor did he die by a common death: he was crucified, as the lowest malefactor is crucified” (Lightfoot).

  13. Everyday Discipleship What was the mind of Christ? The selfless mind. The sacrificial mind. The serving mind.

Everyday Discipleship The “Kenosis” of Discipleship • Having the selfless and surrendering mind of Jesus must be the direction of the disciple’s life, there can be no other way. • What is being a disciple costing you? • Our lives must be lived in the context of everyday“emptying” ourselves to Jesus as the Lord of our lives. • 2Cor 5:14-16 • Phil. 3:7-9; 2:3,4, 17,18

  15. Everyday Discipleship Discipleship is Belonging To Christ • It not what we give up it’s what wereceiving! It’s not who we were it’s who we are allowed to become! • 1Cor. 6:19,20 • 1Pet. 1:4 • Eph. 1:20-24 • 1Jn. 3:1-3

  16. Everyday Discipleship "Let this mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus" Think these thoughts. Never look exclusively upon your own interests, never count anything of your own worthy to stand in the way, but always be prepared to the last point to deny yourself, that the redemptive purpose of God may flow through the channel of your life to those that sorely need His blessed help. It is a wonderful thing that, day by day, in our poor measure, we may repeat the purpose and the work of Jesus Christ our Emmanuel.
