  1. Task 5 (D2) Produce a written report to DISCUSS the techniques that can be used to aid user access to information on web pages. Ensure you consider the design and functionality of your website as it relates to: • Improving accessibility • Ease of use You can use images within your report, but they must be directly related to the topic being discussed and must not be large in size. I would expect this report to be at minimum of 4-6 pages in length

Why websites should be made accessible? • Web Accessibility • Web accessibility means that people with disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the Web, and contribute to the web. • Why? • The web is becoming a necessary resource for many aspects of life: • Education • Employment • Government • Commerce (Business) – disabled users make up 10% of web users • Health care • Recreation • Legal Requirements • Who? • Visually Disabled Users – use of text descriptions or web reader • Hearing Disabilities – text description or images • Physical Disabilities – reduce/remove navigation where possible • Cognitive and Neurological Disabilities – Simplify web layout

What software and tools can be used to aid Ease of Use? • Tools for checking your website has been designed with accessibility in mind • Specialist software such as BROWSE ALOUD • Browse Aloud reads web pages aloud for people who find it difficult to read online. Reading large amounts of text on screen can be difficult for those with literacy and visual impairments • What can be changed on the BROWSER? • Knowing how to change text size through the browser • Knowing how to change brightness and contrast

  4. Specialist software such as BROWSE ALOUD • Browse Aloud reads web pages aloud for people who find it difficult to read online. Reading large amounts of text on screen can be difficult for those with literacy and visual impairments • Browse Aloud has many features to assist those with dyslexia, literacy difficulties, mild visual impairments and where English is a second language. Browse Aloud features and options are accessed from an easy to use, floating toolbar. They include: • Hover Highlighting • TextSelection • Translator • Dictionary • Screen Masking • MP3 Maker

  5. How can DREAMWEAVER help • Placing alternate text on images • Defining the Language of a page

  6. Providing acronym and abbreviation tags • Create skip navigation • A skip navigation is a link that takes the user to a particular section within the same page. This section usually contains the page’s main content. • Screen reader users and people with motor disabilities who cannot use the mouse benefit from this link.

  7. Task • Describe what you have done to your website to make it accessible and also suggest additional amendments that could be applied to your website design and how they would improve accessibility • Text description for all images • Use of San Serif fonts • Contrasting colours • Font size • Logical Navigation Make a note of ways you have used these, in pairs.
