  2. Who was Athena? • One of the main Goddesses in Greek Mythology • Goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law & justice, welfare, math, strength, strategy, arts, crafts and skill.

Many Names of Athena • Throughout Mythology, Athena is referred to with many different names. • She was referred to as Pallas Athena • She was called Athena Parthenos, because she was a virgin and never had a steady lover. Despite her virginity, she bore a child. • The Romans called her Minerva. • The people of Athens had a statue made in her honor.

  4. Athena and Athens • The city of Athens is based off of Athena • The name Athens means “Many Athenas”

  5. Family • Zeus was Athena’s father. • Titan Metis was her mother, she is said to get her wisdom and courage from her. • After her birth, Zeus swallowed Metis in fear that she would have a boy if she became pregnant again.

  6. Stories • Athena played a major role in the Judgment of Paris and the Trojan War. • She was one of the three goddesses to participate in the beauty contest with Paris. • She offered him the gift of wisdom, fame and glory in battle. • When he rejected her offerings, her and the 3 other goddesses began a war in Troy.

  7. Stories Continued • Athena helped guide Peresus to behead Medusa She also helped Hercules defeat the Stymphalian Birds and helped him capture Cerberus.

  8. Achievements • Since Athena was the Goddess of Arts and Crafts, she created many useful items for the Greeks. Some of these included: • Potters wheel • Vase • Horse • Bridle • Chariot • Ship • Rake • Plow

Morals • Athena was one of the kindest Goddesses in Edith Hamilton’s Mythology. • Promoted welfare and good government. • Her temper was based on her mercy. • Athena did not tolerate lack of respect. When she was disrespected, she acted against it. • Turned Arachne into a spider when he was boasting about his spinning skills. • Blinded Tiresias when he saw her bathing.
