  6. PRACTICAL TIPS • CHECK THE SALIENCE OF A PARTICULAR JOURNAL IN ITS ACADEMIC FIELD • - HOW OFTEN ARE ITS ARTICLES CITED? • - SOME ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES HAVE A RANKING FOR JOURNALS • CHECK THE EXPECTED TURNAROUND TIME FOR REVIEW AND PUBLICATION • MAKE SURE THAT YOUR ARTICLE FITS THE STATED CRITERIA FOR PUBLICATION IN A PARTICULAR JOURNAL

  7. REFEREES’ REPORTS • OPTIONS: • PUBLISH WITHOUT REVISIONS • PUBLISH WITH MINOR REVISIONS (AT DISCRETION OF EDITOR) • RE-SUBMIT WITH MAJOR REVISIONS (REFEREES TO BE CONSULTED) • REJECT • ADVISE TO SUBMIT TO A DIFFERENT JOURNAL ON BASIS OF SUBJECT MATTER OR MODE OF ANALYSIS

  8. What does a Referee look for? • EVALUATION : • 1. Significance of the article __ HIGH __ MEDIUM __ LOW • 2. Appropriateness for this journal __ HIGH __ MEDIUM __ LOW • 3. Quality of the research (Design, data, analysis, interpretation) ___HIGH ___MEDIUM __LOW • 4. Quality of writing (Clarity, organization, style, format) __HIGH __MEDIUM __LOW

  9. AUTHORSHIP • SINGLE AUTHORSHIP VERSUS MULTIPLE CO-AUTHORSHIP • DISCIPLINARY NORMS • ORDER OF CO-AUTHORSHIP: • ALPHABETICAL OR NON-ALPHABETICAL

  10. WHAT TO AVOID • SUBMISSION TO MORE THAN ONE JOURNAL SIMULTANEOUSLY • FAILURE OF APPROPRIATE ATTRIBUTION • LACK OF DUE DILIGENCE IN CITATION (E.G., MISSING REFERENCES) • MISSING ELEMENTS IN CITATIONS (E.G., PAGE NUMBERS FROM BOOK CHAPTERS) • POOR EDITING (TYPOS, GRAMMATICAL ERRORS, ETC.) • WEAK INTRODUCTIONS AND CONCLUSIONS • FAILURE TO INDICATE WHY THE RESEARCH IS SIGNIFICANT
