Source design constrain Source design is driven by: Irradiation process technique @ reactor (reactor channel dimension, total reactor irradiation space, source manipulation limitation, assembly, ecc…) Biological shielding requrementsby low (tungsten shield thickness) Thermal constrains (dissipation of more than 2500 W) Mechanical constrains (tunnel dimension, total weight, ecc) Transportation requirements and containers design and production Hot cell manipulation (@ reactor and @ NUCLECO in Rome) Handling in Hall C (logistic, clean room entrance, rails, ecc…) Calorimeter integration Paolo Lombardi - I.N.F.N. Possible source configurations At this moment in time we have explored three possible mechanical designs: Five/four steel containers to be filled/welded after Cr chips irradiation 220 small containers to be filled and sealed before Cr chips irradiation Solid Cr roads (electro deposition from existing Cr chips enriched matherial) All solutions show a safe thermal behavior under natural convection The inner mechanical design is different for the three solutions while the tungsten body, copper shield and aluminum cooling fins could remain identical or just size scaled Paolo Lombardi - I.N.F.N.   13. Xx solid rods The idea is to realize a number of solid metallic rods from existing Cr by electro deposition on a wire support. Diameter, height and number of rods will be decided from reactor activation simulation and mechanical constrains due to reactor activation channels size and Bx tunnel dimension. As soon as reactor simulations will deliver the suggested rod dimension we will provide the consequent mechanical design. (diameter > 10 mm, height = 250/280 mm) This solution offer some important advantage: Rods are solid, easy to be handled in reactor and during transportation Less hazards for environment pollution No more concern for chips sintering problem if T > 700 °C Better thermal conductivity of metallic Cr (factor 100) More compact source design (smaller Tungsten container, less weight, smaller transport containers) Paolo Lombardi - I.N.F.N.   14. Thermal Analysis All the proposed solutions have been carefully studied with a Thermal and Mechanical FEA with ANSYS in Milano, Genova and LNGS. Dissipation of 2500 W is not trivial in a sealed tungsten container with all the concern about thermal expansion coefficient of different materials that cannot be rigidly coupled together (spring mounting). A large portion of heat transfer will go through irradiation process, a careful study and optimization of emission irradiation coefficient of materials will be mandatory.   24. SOX pit modification • Some preliminary modification of the SOX pit / CR1 should be done in advance: • Installation of a new 5 tons winch on the existing HEB beam • Installation of two steel roads to slide the source on a trolley from the entrance of the CR1 to the end of the tunnel (rods will be secured to the CR1 steel floor by welding small steel anchor plates, calorimeter will be also the source trolley) • CR1 has been designed with 2 removable panels on the south-west side that should be temporary removed • CR1 tunnel manhole should be temporary removed • Very probably there will be water inside the tunnel. A water pumping system should be implemented on the CR1 well realized by the “Commissario”. Pump and hoses are already available in GS. • Air ventilation system needed inside the tunnel for heat exchange and security • Manual winch with steel rope for the trolley movement inside the tunnel • Trolley proximity sensor at the end of the tunnel, thermometer sensors, radiation counters, lights, ecc…inside the tunnel Paolo Lombardi - I.N.F.N.
