Daily Writing: Popular Quotes 5/27/14 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: • What do we mean when we say, "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence"? • What do we mean when we say, "You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar"? Planner: • Poetry/poetic terms final Monday • Turn in your journals on Friday. • No late work past Friday. Turn in your late HW passes on Friday.

  3. Tuesday: Poetry • Show me your SPLASHED poetry packet. • At your tables, reread the poems and discuss. • Silently read “We Real Cool.” Read it a 2nd time and consider how the poem should be best read aloud. Consider: • When to pause and why • What words to stress and why • In groups, create a performance using this poem.   4. Daily Writing: Summer or Winter? 5/28/14 Choose onepicture, and start a story: • Planner: • Due tomorrow: write your own poem • Poetry/poetic terms final Monday • Turn in your journals on Friday. No late work past Friday.

  5. Wednesday: Poetry • Figurative language review: matching • Each poetic device has a corresponding definition and example – match them up! • Fatah, Iman, Yusra and Fardosa have the answer key – don’t take it out until you’re pretty sure you have them all correct!

  6. Wednesday: Poetry Journal title: Brainstorming… Start by just brainstorming things about you… things you’re interested in, words you’d use to characterize yourself, people who are important to you, things that make you mad, things that irritate you, things that bring you happiness, accomplishments, fears, let downs…ANYTHING! Just WRITE! Journal title: I Am [Age] • Draft your own poem starting with “I am [your age]. • Finish your poem by tomorrow!

Daily Writing: Hard Work 5/29/14 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: • “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” ~Thomas A.   8. Thursday: Poetry Show me your free-verse rough draft. Mac Cart • Share your poem with a peer and get feedback. • REVISE and type your poem. Add: metaphors, similes, alliteration, personification, imagery, hyperbole, Etc., etc. etc. ;) • E-mail me your poem by the end of the period: kathleen@stepacademymn.com

  10. Friday: Poetry • Late work??? Hand in your journal & poem before you leave! • If you don’t have late work to do, silently practice your poem & decorate it. • Poetry SLAM! Read your poem with FEELING! SHOW us the meaning of your poem by using your voice. You know the drill: ONE VOICE! • Final Monday: any questions?
