Introduction Unit 3: Christ’s Perfect Response to God’s Word Unit 4: OurRedeemed Response to God’s Word
Introduction The goal of this lesson is to explore the authority of God’s Word in the life of the Christian. We’ll consider the questions… Why should I submit to God’s Word? What will submission to God’s Word look like?
Introduction Some preliminary reasons for submitting to God’s Word:
Introduction Some preliminary reasons for submitting to God’s Word: 1. The Word is “able to save your souls.”
Introduction [21] Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. [22] But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. [23] For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. [24] For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. [25] But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. (James 1:21-25 ESV)
Introduction Some preliminary reasons for submitting to God’s Word: • The Word is “able to save your souls.” • Submitting to the Word is an act of love toward God. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” (John 14:15 ESV)
1. God’s Word tells us the truth. [12] For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. [13]And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. (Hebrews 4:12-13 ESV)
1. God’s Word tells us the truth. 1. The truth of God’s Word is final. “The doctrine of Scripture teaches us about the authority of God’s Word. Scripture must be the final rule of faith and practice for our lives. Not our feelings or emotions. Not signs or prophetic words or hunches.” (Josh Harris)
1. God’s Word tells us the truth. • The truth of God’s Word is final. • The truth of God’s Word is timeless. Your word, O LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. (Psalm 119:89 NIV) The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. (Isaiah 40:8 ESV) “The Bible is old, but the Bible never gets old.”
1. God’s Word tells us the truth. • The truth of God’s Word is final. • The truth of God’s Word is timeless. • The truth of God’s Word is personal. [12] For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. [13] And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. (Hebrews 4:12-13 ESV)
2. God’s Word cuts to the heart of our sinful condition. God’s Word is dangerous. It pierces deeply, discerns, exposes and leaves us naked.
2. God’s Word cuts to the heart of our sinful condition. What is sin?
2. God’s Word cuts to the heart of our sinful condition. Yes, sin is the transgression of God’s law. But sin always involves loving self more than God. Sin is always rooted in believing a lie.
2. God’s Word cuts to the heart of our sinful condition. We can go through our days insensitive to our own sin, or ignorant of our sin because we’re not exposing ourselves to God’s cutting, stripping Word. See the story of Josiah and his people…They “knew” God’s Word.
3. God uses his Word to bring us to repentance. Doctrine of Inerrancy “Inerrancy means that when all facts are known, the Scriptures in their original autographs and properly interpreted will be shown to be wholly true in everything that they affirm” (Grudem).
3. God uses his Word to bring us to repentance. Doctrine of Infallibility The Bible does not misdirect or lead us astray. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105 ESV) The Bible is trustworthy and is not able to mislead us in all matters of faith and practice.
3. God uses his Word to bring us to repentance. Doctrine of Infallibility “God’s weapon contains no deficiencies inherent to its design, construction, and effectiveness. It pierces its target every time, for God said ‘My word that comes from my mouth will not return to me empty, but it will accomplish what I please and will prosper in what I send it to do’ (Isaiah 55:11).” (GP)
3. God uses his Word to bring us to repentance. What is repentance?
3. God uses his Word to bring us to repentance. Repentance is both the turning away from sin, and turning to God. “Repentance is (1) an intellectual understanding that sin is wrong, (2) a sorrow over sin and hatred of it, and (3) a personal decision to renounce sin and lead a life of obedience to Christ” (Grudem).
3. God uses his Word to bring us to repentance. But if sin always involves loving self more than God, and if sin is always rooted in believing a lie, then… Repentance for Christians means turning back to our first love. It means rejecting lies and embracing truth. Examples…
Implications 1. God’s Word is personal, but not relative.
Implications • God’s Word is personal, but not relative. • If we cheapen the law, we will cheapen grace.
Implications • God’s Word is personal, but not relative. • If we cheapen the law, we will cheapen grace. • Jesus withstood the discerning, exposing power of God’s Word. Yet…
