  2. Windows - Keyboard • Special keys include ALT (Alternate), Delete and CTRL (Control).

  3. Windows - Keyboard • These are some short cuts using the Ctrl key • CTRL + S = SAVE CTRL + Z = Un Do • CTRL + C = COPY • CTRL + V = PASTE

  4. Windows - Mouse • The Windows mouse has two buttons. • Usually the left mouse button is used. • “Right click” means to use the other button (on the right). • Right click will give you shortcut menus in applications. Right side

  6. Windows - Booting • To boot means to start the computer when it is off “cold boot”. • It comes from the word “bootstrapping” - to “pull itself up by its own bootstraps”. • To boot a Windows computer, turn on the computer and the monitor.

  7. Windows - Restarting • To reboot/restart means to restart the computer when it is on (“warm boot”). • To reboot a Windows, click START, then the arrow next to the shut down button, and finally RESTART. Start Button

  8. Windows - Shut Down • To shut down means to turn off the computer • To shut down a Windows computer, click START, then SHUT DOWN. • You may need to turn off the monitor separately.

  9. Windows - Disk Drive Names • The 3.5” floppy drive is called A: • The hard drive is called Local Disk (C:) • Other drives (CD-ROM, etc) are identified by a letter followed by a colon. The letters will vary by computer.

  10. Windows - Disk Contents • The easiest way to see the contents of a disk is to use My Computer. • Your Documents are stored in the (Z:) DRIVE • Double click My Computer on the desktop, then double click the appropriate disk icon (floppy, zip, CD, etc).

  11. Windows - “Windows” • When you open a file or program, the contents are displayed in a window. • When you are working with documents, several windows may be present on the screen.

  13. Windows - Disk Removal • If you are not currently working on a file that is stored on a disk, you should be able to press the button and eject it.

  14. To remove a flash drive… • Go to My computer • Right click on your flash drive select eject.

  15. Windows - Starting Programs • The easiest way to start programs is to click on the START button, then on PROGRAMS.

  16. Quitting Programs • The usual way to quit a program in Windows is to choose Exit command from the File menu, • ALT F X is a shortcut for quitting. (ALT underlined letter of File, underlined letter of Exit). • Note: ALT can be used to access most menus from the keyboard.

  17. Windows - Deleting Files • The easiest way to delete a file is to click on its icon and press DELETE. • You can also right-click on an icon and choose Delete from the menu that appears. • NOTE: “When in doubt, right click.” is a good motto to remember in Windows.

  18. Windows - Renaming Files • Right click on the file icon and choose RENAME from the menu that appears. • Type the new name.

  19. Windows - Copying Files • Right click on the file icon and choose COPY. You then need to PASTE the file in another location. • You can also right click and choose SEND TO.
