New Nations Emerge Witness History Audio: Kenya Achieves Independence Africa’s Colonies Gain Independence Africa’s valuable natural resources—such as petroleum, gold, copper, and diamonds—made its colonizers rich. Some countries were able to win independence with only political pressure. In colonies where many Europeans had settled, however, the struggle often turned violent.   2. New Nations Emerge Africans Build New Nations The newly independent African countries struggled. Many early leaders were dictators who left office only through a coup. Western governments and the World Bank began requiring democratic reforms in exchange for loans. During the Cold War, the U.S. and the Soviet Union tried to gain an advantage in influencing African countries. The first president became dictatorial and corrupt and was ousted in a coup led by Jerry Rawlings. Rawlings restored democracy to Ghana. Kenya was home to a struggle between white settlers and displaced African farmers. 2 of 8

  3. New Nations Emerge The Stories of Five African Nations continued When rebel leader Jomo Kenyatta became president, he outlawed opposition parties. Democracy was restored only through violent demonstrations and pressure from foreign lenders. Algeria was important to France because of its oil and natural gas and because of the many French who had settled there. When public opinion in France finally stopped the bloodshed and gave Algeria independence, the struggle for government control began. One major faction is the Islamists, who want government policies to reflect the teachings of Islam. Section 3: African Nations Gain Independence 3 of 8

New Nations Emerge The Stories of Five African Nations continued In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a struggle for influence between the U.S. and the Soviet Union gave power to a corrupt dictator. Civil war then further ravaged the country. In Nigeria, regional, ethnic, and religious differences led to military coups and a civil war.
