  1. QUALITATIVE VS. QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

  2. QUAntiTATIVE RESEARCH • The goal is scientific objectivity, the focus is on data that can be measured numerically.

  3. QUALITATIVE RESEARCH • Interpretive description in words rather than statistics is used to analyze the underlying meanings and patterns of social relationships.

  4. STEPS IN THE Quantitative research process: • SELECT AND DEFINE THE RESEARCH PROBLEM What do I want to know about this topic • REVIEW OF PREVIOUS RESEARCH Review books/articles What have others written about the topic • FORMULATE A HYPOTHESIS A statement of relationship between two concepts • DEVELOP THE RESEARCH What type of research method to use • COLLECT AND ANALYZE THE DATA Analysis- The process through which data are organized so that comparisons can be made and conclusions drawn. • DRAW CONCLUSIONS AND REPORT FINDINGS How does the data relate to the hypothesis?

  5. Difference in the Qualitative research process: • The researcher begins with a general approach rather than a highly detailed plan. The “HOW” and “WHAT”…not necessarily the “WHY” • The researcher has to decide when the literature review and theory application should take place. May take place after the data has been collected. • The study presents a detailed view of the topic. Small cases + more variables= DETAIL
