The Derelict Vessel Removal Program has successfully removed 516 vessels with 18 still in progress as of January 2014. Funding for recreational vessel removals is set at $800,000 per year, while the Aquatic Lands Enhancement Account (ALEA) provides an additional $300,000. Recent legislation has made the $1 vessel registration fee permanent and has addressed issues related to selling agency-owned vessels in poor condition. The program aims to increase vessel owner responsibilities and enhance efforts toward vessel removal and deconstruction through ongoing rule-making and proposed permits.
