  3. Formatting Guide • TTU Home • Graduate School • Current Students • Thesis Dissertation “In instances where this manual gives formatting specifications that differ from those in your designated style guide, specifications in this manual supersede those that may be listed in your required style guide” (p.1).

  4. Style Guide • Physics, Wind Science, and Engineering Turabian, Kate L. A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations. 6th ed. Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press, 1996.

  5. Overview • Basic Formatting • Paragraph Organization and Grammar • Missing Data

  6. Overview • Basic Formatting • Header • Front Matter • Text Formatting • Tables and Figures

  7. Basic Formatting • Header According to the Texas Tech University Graduate School Thesis-Dissertation Formatting Guidelines, the following running header should start on the “Acknowledgements” page and running through the end of the document (p.5): Texas Tech University, Chad EwertKronkosky, May 2009 Currently, your thesis’s running header looks as follows: Texas Tech University, Chad EwertKronkosky, May 2009 Header should follow the university provided guidelines. Chad can format the running header in either the original word document or in LaTex. Au: Be sure to italicize the month and year of graduation.

  8. Basic Formatting • Front Matter • Table of Contents • “I suggest you simplify your thesis TOC to only include the first level of subheading. The university formatting guide warns applicants: “Be careful about using too many [subtitle] levels as it becomes cumbersome and unwieldy for the reader” (p.8). Also, according to the same formatting guide, you are not to list subheadings used in Appendices in the TOC (p.8).”

  9. Basic Formatting • Front Matter • List of Tables • “Required if more than two tables” (University Formatting Guidelines, p.8) • However, if Chad were to exceed two tables, a “List of Tables” section is required • List of Figures

  10. Basic Formatting • Text Formatting • “Currently, your chapter titles are in all uppercase letters. While this is strictly a personal preference—since neither the university formatting guide or recommended style guide specify prefer a specific style—I suggest altering chapter titles to the traditional uppercase beginning followed by lowercase lettering. Not only will this help unify all headings, it makes for a much more appealing look.” • “Double check your body text font, size, and spacing. In print, the body text in Chapter 1 greatly differs from the text formatting in Chapter 2.”

  11. Basic Formatting • Tables and Figures “Right now, both Table 4.1 and Table 4.2 lack table titles. According to the university formatting guide, table titles are to be placed above the actual table. You have provided a brief call out—Table 4.1: Input probability distributions functions used in CBM horizontal reservoir performance model. However, you may want to consider adding a unique title such as: Probability Distribution Functions. All table titles should be formatted in accordance with pre-existing figure titles.” “Kate Turabian, author of your department recommended style guide, suggests you provide brief descriptions or “call outs” for all tables and figures. Call outs provide a quick reference for readers by highlighting the purpose of the table of figure. Call outs can be as simple as: “Notice, Fig 1.1 shows the Illinois Basin having a CBM potential resource of 3.9”. I suggest you include a brief explanation for all figures and tables in your thesis.”

  12. Overview • Paragraph Organization and Grammar • Topic Sentences • Eliminate “to be” Verbs

  13. Paragraph Organization and Grammar • Topic Sentences • “I suggest you check for topic sentences at the beginning of each new paragraph. Every paragraph needs a topic sentence. The topic sentence is usually the first sentence of the paragraph. It gives the reader an idea of what the paragraph is going to be about. I have marked where a topic sentence is needed throughout your thesis. In addition, I provided a couple examples of good topic sentences in my comments.”

  14. Paragraph Organization and Grammar • Eliminate “to be” Verbs • “Try to eliminate “to be” verbs—am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been, become—by replacing them with a more active verb. Additionally, you can eliminate “to be” verbs by rephrasing the statement.” Ex. The depth of the Seelyville coal ispresented in Fig. 4.4. Fig 4.4 presents the Seelyville Coal depth. ______ provides ______ exemplifies ______ shows ______ represents ______ depicts

  15. Missing Data • Abstract • List of Figures • 4.5 Summary • Appendix B • Bibliography of References

  16. Conclusion • What I learned…. • Be patient • Don’t assume • Be able to defend your suggestions • Don’t be afraid to say NO! • Future Career • Social Networking
