What is an Epithet? • an adjective or descriptive phrase expressing a characteristic about a person or thing. • Often used in poetry (to describe something or someone using few words) • Some epithets become so established that they are more well known than the actual persons they refer to. Alexander the Great is actually Alexander III of Macedon
Examples of Epithets: Movies • André René Roussimoff OR “Andre the Giant”
Examples of Epithets: Music • Elvis Presley, King of Rock and Roll • Michael Jackson, King of Pop • Ella Fitzgerald, first Lady of Soul
Examples of Epithets: Literature Greek Mythology • Grey-eyed Athena • White-armed Hera • Swift-footedAchilles • Calypso, loveliest among goddesses • Notice that the Epithet is used to describe the person.
