What is an Epithet? • an adjective or descriptive phrase expressing a characteristic about a person or thing. • Often used in poetry (to describe something or someone using few words) • Some epithets become so established that they are more well known than the actual persons they refer to. Alexander the Great is actually Alexander III of Macedon

  3. Examples of Epithets: Movies • André René Roussimoff OR “Andre the Giant”

  4. Examples of Epithets: Music • Elvis Presley, King of Rock and Roll • Michael Jackson, King of Pop • Ella Fitzgerald, first Lady of Soul

  5. Examples of Epithets: Literature Greek Mythology • Grey-eyed Athena • White-armed Hera • Swift-footedAchilles • Calypso, loveliest among goddesses • Notice that the Epithet is used to describe the person.

  6. What Would your Epithet Be? • Think of an epithet for yourself • Must be school appropriate • Think about things you love that define you! • Examples: • Mrs. Snyder, teacher of Shakespeare • Mrs. Snyder, supporter of 80’s teenage movies • Mrs. Snyder, lover of throwing spears, jumping in mud pits, and traversing monkey bars!
