WHAT IS ENUM? • ‘Electronic numbering’ or ‘electronic number mapping’ • IETF protocol that maps telephone numbers to domain names • Globally accessible telephone book indexed by number • Does not carry or set-up calls
BENEFITS & OPPORTUNITIES • Simplified business card • Number for life • Called-party or calling-party settings • Improve interoperability of PSTN/IP: • access by phone • simpler addressing • Benefits for consumers/carriers: • toll bypass, new applications

LAW ENFORCEMENT ISSUES • Access to emergency services • Interception of carriage services • Access to customer information
EMERGENCY SERVICES • Calls made/received using existing services & equipment • No bearing on whether service falls within ‘SETS’ definition • No change to application of current rules • No adverse affect on access to emergency services
INTERCEPTION • ENUM doesn’t carry traffic, set-up calls • All calls carried by CSPs on existing networks • No change to carriers/CSPs legislative obligations • No impact on agencies capacity to intercept communications
ACCESS TO CUSTOMER INFO • Telco Act rules apply to carriers/CSPs • Under ENUM: • still access info from carriers/CSPs • may not be able to access certain ‘ENUM-specific’ info due to status of registry/registrar • Available under existing warrant process • Shortfall acknowledged - will be subject to review
