  3. Pilot context: Association of ParticipantsÀgora Àgora is a non-profit making association of adults who do not have any academic degree. It is dedicated to the non-formal training of lifelong learners, especially those who are socially excluded. Àgora has two aims: • To offer a wide range of educative and cultural activities • To promote the managing ability and initiative of adults • School open 7 days a week, from 9am to 10pm • 460 weekly hours of activities • All activities are free

  4. Àgora participants and collaborators • 1.600 participants - Adults without academic degree - Teenagers and young adults who have experienced school failure - Women - Immigrants - People with special learning needs • 120 volunteers - University lecturers - Students - Housewives, etc.

  5. Participation in projects and international recognition • Àgora has coordinated and participated in more than 30 European projects mainly focusing on ICT • International reference for its socio-educational model - An article on Àgora as educational model was published in the Harvard Educational Review (1999) - Àgora was declared of “common public and social interest” by the Spanish Home Office (2006)

Challenging context of the pilot Learners involved have typically: • low educational profiles and not used/don’t have the necessary confidence to plan and perform activities on their own initiative • low computer skills, which could hinder their learning process in the use of TENCompetence tooling Non-formal learning context. It is not possible to oblige participants to acquire the skills involved or to continue developing competences.

Pilot 1 completed: 6 weeks Competence profiles:English (Basic and advanced) + ICT related competence profiles Tools: to create personal development plan, run simple and sequences of activities Setting: computer room in Àgora, home Learners: > 100.65 % women; mean age: 58; mainly born in Spain; educational level very diverse + experts, volunteers, etc. Pilot 2 currently running: 3 months (March-June 2009) Existing + new competence profiles + new associated competences + new activities Tools:as in previous pilot + sharing resources + running assessment activities + forum Learners: > 100 vary in terms of age (19-84), gender, origin (local + newcomers), educational levels and motivation. Learning focusing on competences(not topic based) Competence profile + associated competences + activities Advanced level of English  Being able to read and understand texts from different sources - Fiction stories - Extracts from literary works - Online newspapers - Texts + tests related to British and American culture, etc.  Being able to understand the main ideas of conversations and speeches; - Practice with songs - Pronunciations activities - Daily dialogues and conversations - International news - Trailers,etc.

Tooling • Liferay: portal that integrates TENCompetence tools • Web PDP: to create personal development plans in accordance to the participants’ interests and needs • LD & QTI runtime: run sequences of learning and assessment activities based on tests. • LearnWeb:container of Web 2.0 tools to manage and share resourses (photographs, videos, etc.), make comments, group work, etc.
