  1. Intelligent Battery Care

  2. Safety instructions. Keepower chargers can be used to charge lead-acid batteries only(wet, gel, AGM, Ca/Ca…) Don’t use them to Ni-Cd, Ni-MH, Li-Poly and other types of batteries.

  3. Battery. Construction. Vent cap Cell Negative (-) terminal Positive (+) terminal Plates

  4. Battery. Construction. Cell.

  5. Battery. Construction. Cell. Positive (+) plate E=2,13V/ Cell6 cells=12.78 V Negative (-) plate H2SO4 H2O PbO2 Pb Electrolyt gravity 1.28g/ cm3

  6. Battery. Cell. Discharging. Positive (+) plate Negative (-) plate H2SO4 H2O PbO2 Pb Electrolyte gravity for battery 11.8V approx. 1.1 g/ cm3 PbSO4

  7. Battery. Cell. Charging. Positive (+) plate Negative (-) plate H2SO4 H2O PbO2 Wet battery max. voltage 2.4V/cell or 14.4V/12V battery while charging. Pb PbSO4

  8. Battery. Parameters • Nominal voltage • Capacity • Battery type • Battery voltage while not used • Maximum voltage while charging • Maximum charging current • Electrolyte gravity

  9. Battery. Parameters Nominal voltage [V] • 6V (3 cels) • 12V (6cells) • 24V (2 batteries 12V conected parallely) Never use 12V charger to charge 6V or 24V battery!

  10. Battery. Parameters Capacity [Ah] Capacity says how much energy a battery can store. Charging current [A] depends on the battery capacity. Smaller batteries have to be charged with smaller charging currents.

  11. Battery. Parameters Battery types • Wet- (flooded) battery- electrolyte flows freely throughout the battery cell • Gel- diluted sulfuric acid is solidyfied to gel state by adding gel agent e.g. silicon dioxide • AGM- electrolyte is absorbed by glass mat separator placed between plates • Ca/Ca - plates and grids contain calcium preventing quick selfdischarging and rising gas limit voltage

  12. Battery. Parameters • Battery voltage [V] while not used • Measuring voltage on the battery while not used • user can verify battery condition. • 12V battery voltage facts: • 11.8V –deeply discharged • 12.0V-discharged • 12.2V-low charged • 12.4V –medium charged • 12.7-fully charged

  13. Battery. Parameters Battery voltage [V] while not used Measuring voltage on the battery while not used user can verify battery condition. Note: The state of charge is an approximation. The relationship between state of charge and voltage vary by battery condition, battery age, temperature.

  14. Battery. Parameters Maximum voltage [V] while charging • Maximum voltage (gas limit) • Wet (flooded) 14.4V • Gel 14.4V • AGM 14.8V • Ca/Ca 15.9V • All Keepower chargers finish charging • at gas limit voltage automatically. Charging over the gas limit voltage can damage the battery. Overcharging is especially dangerous for the health of gel and AGM batteries. Overcharged battery produce oxygene and hydrogen giving a dangerous explosive mixture.

  15. Battery. Parameters Maximum charging current [A] To prevent damage the battery should be charged with current [A] not exceeding maximum recomended current by the batteries producer. Usually the maximum charging current is bigger for a battery with a bigger capacity.

  16. Battery. Parameters. Maximum charging current [A] Charging current can’t exceed „3h” current. For 120Ah we can calculate maximum charging current: 120Ah:3h=40A Using higher charging current we can destroy the battery (separators and plates) due to rising electrolyte temperature.

  17. Battery. Parameters Electrolyte gravity In batteries with access to cells electrolyte gravity can be measured by aerometer. Result gives important information regarding battery condition. Fully charged battery haselectrolyte gravity 1.28 g/cm3 (normal gravity). Not fully charged battery has lower gravity of electrolyte. Low gravity (lower than normal) - battery needs charging.

  18. Battery. Parameters Electrolyte gravity Higher gravity (higher than normal)- battery lost water by overcharging (gassing). The Battery can be sulfurized because of too high gravity of acid. Separators can be destroyed as well. Battery with low acidic gravity can freeze below zero. Battery case can be destroyed from inside by ice. A frozen battery won’t work or be charged.

  19. Battery. Parameters Electrolyte gravity. Charge (power) level. Temperature.

  20. Battery. Parameters Electrolyte gravity. Temperature. Freezing point.

  21. Important things to remember when buying a charger Do you…. • Do you want to charge all lead-acid battery types (wet, gel, AGM etc. ) with one unit? • Do you want to charge 12V or 24V batteries using one device? • Do you want to save time leaving the chargerconnected to the battery unattended ? • Do you want to be able to charge deeply • discharged batteries with voltage 0V ?

  22. Important things to remember when buying a charger Do you…. Do you want to be able to „kick” sulfurizatedbattery to start receiving energy? Do you want to be able to keep the voltage on your car while replacing the battery or without the engine running (dealer station)? Do you want to verify battery conditionwith your charger? Do you want to be environmental friendly using charger with high efficiency level?

  23. Important things to remember when buying a charger Choosing chargers that can say YES to all points.☺☺☺

  36. Tester. Battery tester section The battery must be at ambient temperature (20°C) and at least 4 hours in resting state (without charging any vehicle or intelligent battery care) to ensure that the displayed value is reliable.

  37. Tester. Test results Discharged If battery needs to be quickly charged, choose Intelligent boostcharge. Low Battery can be charged in the normal charging mode. Medium Battery can be charged in the normal charging mode. Full No charging required. Deeply discharged If battery needs to be quickly charged, choose Intelligent boostcharge.

  38. Tester. Test result XL-pro. Deep Discharged: If battery symbol is flashing Immediate charging is needed. Charging will start with Softcharge. Full: There is no reason to charge. However a small top-up charge can normally be added. Medium: The battery can be charged with proper (Wet, gel etc.) charging mode. Low: The battery can be charged with in the proper (Wet, Gel etc.) charging mode.. Discharged battery: softcharge is activated automatically when charging starts.
