Minimum Paraeducator Requirements Be at least eighteen years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent (for more detailed information on what is considered equivalent, please read our additional resource; and In addition, a paraeducator must meet one or more of the following: • Have received a qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment as published by PESB;OR • Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university; OR • Have earned seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight semester credits at the one hundred level or higher at an accredited college or university; OR • Have completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council. This does not apply to substitute paraeducators. NOTE: Title I rules supersede.

Timeline for Paraeducator Certificate Program • 2019-20 • ALL paraeducators must meet minimum paraeducator requirements plus: • *Fundamental Course of Study (FCS) – 14 hours of training • Employed as a paraeducator in 2018-19: Must complete hours by Sept. 1, 2020 • Hired as a paraeducator for 2019-20: Must complete hours by Sept. 1, 2021 • 2020-21 (If funded by state) • *Fundamental Course of Study (FCS) – 14 hours of training *FCS Training must be aligned to General Paraeducator Standards of Practice Link: Paraeducator standards of practice.

Timeline for Paraeducator Certificate Program • 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24 AFTER FCS 28 hours are completed and if state funding provided: • *General Paraeducator Certificate(GPC) – 70 hours of training • Three years to complete (after FCS 28 hours is completed) • Does not expire • **ELL Subject Matter Certificate and Special Ed. Subject Matter Certificate – 20 hours of training for each • The 20 hours for each can go towards the 70 hours required for the GPS • Expires in 5 years (Renewable) *GPC Training must be aligned to General Paraeducator Standards of Practice. ** Aligned to the ELL Paraeducator Standards of Practice and Special Ed. Paraeducator Standards of Practice

  7. Timeline for Paraeducator Certificate Program • 2025 - AFTER FCS 28 hours and GPC 70 hours are completed: • Advance Paraeducator Certificate (APC) – 75 hours of training • Expires after 5 years (Renewable)

Online Curriculum Paraeducators: What We Do Matters FREE Online Course • 12 hours total (unless blended approach used with face-to-face instruction added) • District would need to provide an additional 16 hours to complete the FCS. • 7 of the 28 FCS training hours must be face-to-face • Link: “Paraeducators: what we do matters”

Online CourseParaeducators: what we do matters • How to best utilize the online Modules? • Assign paraeducators to complete specific modules on compensated time • Homework assignments can be used from journal activities or you can create your own • Provide a facilitator to conduct a face-to-face sessions which reviews online content and adds required content to finish and meet learning outcomes from FCS course outline

  13. Funding 2019-20 • Estimated reimbursement for Fundamental Course of Study 14 hours of training • $218 per day (or per 7 hours of training) • Total of $436 for both days (or total 14 hours) • Must go first to cover salary and benefits of paraeducators for the two days of training. • Any funding left over, the district may choose how to allocate the additional funds. • Districts apply for reimbursement via iGrants (estimated to be by as early as July 1, 2020)
