  1. DISPENSATIONAL PREMILLENNIALISM A FALSE HERMENEUTIC

  2. PREMILLENNIALISM DEFINED Premillennialism is the doctrine that the second coming of Jesus Christ will precede the supposed millennium - a period of one thousand literal years, during which He will reign on earth as King. "Dispensational" Premillennialism is somewhat more involved. Chart taken from the book, Jesus Is Coming, by W.E. Blackstone, first published in 1898.

  3. PREMILLENNIALISM While there are many variations, some of the more popular features of Dispensational Premillennialism are: • Jesus came, the first time, to establish a geopolitical kingdom, composed of Jews only. • The Jews prevented this by rejecting Him as king. • He established the church, instead, and will return to establish a geopolitical kingdom. • The church age, therefore, is a parenthesis in the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy.

  4. PREMILLENNIALISM • At the end of the church age, Christ will descend from heaven to receive His Bride, the church. • The dead in Christ will be raised, and living Christians will be changed. • Both groups of believers will then be "raptured" or caught up to meet Christ in the air. • Christ and His Bride will meet, marry, and remain above the earth for a seven-year honeymoon.

  5. PREMILLENNIALISM • During this seven-year period havoc will break loose on earth - the unequaled tribulation of the Jews. God will now, once again, deal with the Jews. They are restored to their land. • During this time the Antichrist will be revealed. • After the seven-year tribulation/honeymoon period, Christ will be revealed with His saints. • The Gentile nations of the tribulation will be judged for fitness to enter the millennium.

  6. PREMILLENNIALISM • Antichrist, the Beast, and the False Prophet will be destroyed. • Satan will be bound for a literal period of 1,000 years. • The tribulation saints will be raised from the dead. • The 1,000 year reign of Christ and His saints will begin. • At the end of the 1,000 year reign, Satan will be loosed for a short period of time.

  7. PREMILLENNIALISM • Satan is then destroyed with Gog and Magog. • The wicked dead are resurrected. • Judgment at the great white throne will take place. • Eternal reward and eternal punishment will begin.

  8. PREMILLENNIALISM THIS DOCTRINE IS A PATCHWORK OF UNRELATED SCRIPTURES. • They get a 1,000 year reign from a literal interpretation of Rev. 20:1-4, and then build a theory upon this literal interpretation.

  9. PREMILLENNIALISM 1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; 3 and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while.

  10. PREMILLENNIALISM 4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

  11. PREMILLENNIALISM THIS DOCTRINE IS A PATCHWORK OF UNRELATED SCRIPTURES. • They get a 1,000 year reign from a literal interpretation of Rev. 20:1-4, and then build a theory upon this literal interpretation. • As a matter of fact, they interpret much of the language of the book of Revelation literally, although the opening statement of the book makes it clear that the book is composed of symbolic speech (1:1-2).

  12. PREMILLENNIALISM 1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants--things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, 2 who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things that he saw. To signify is to show by signs.

  13. PREMILLENNIALISM EXAMPLES OF "SYMBOLIC SPEECH" 32 "And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself." 33 This He said, signifying by what death He would die. (John 12:32, 33)

  14. PREMILLENNIALISM EXAMPLES OF "SYMBOLIC SPEECH" 18 "Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish." 19 This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, "Follow Me." (John 21:18, 19)

  15. PREMILLENNIALISM EXAMPLES OF "SYMBOLIC SPEECH" 27 And in these days prophets came from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 Then one of them, named Agabus, stood up and showed by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine throughout all the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius Caesar. (Acts 11:27-28)

  16. PREMILLENNIALISM EXAMPLES OF "SYMBOLIC SPEECH" 10 And as we stayed many days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11 When he had come to us, he took Paul's belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, "Thus says the Holy Spirit, 'So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.' " (Acts 21:10-11) Agabus signified something by his action.

  17. PREMILLENNIALISM HOW DOES THIS HELP US TO UNDERSTAND REVELATION 20:4? • It helps us to put it in the context of a highly symbolic book. • 1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants--things which must shortly take place.   20. PREMILLENNIALISM HOW DOES THIS HELP US TO UNDERSTAND REVELATION 20:4? • It helps us to put it in the context of a highly symbolic book. • 14 His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; 15 His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters;

  21. PREMILLENNIALISM HOW DOES THIS HELP US TO UNDERSTAND REVELATION 20:4? • It helps us to put it in the context of a highly symbolic book. • 16 He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. Were these "literal" stars? Was this a "literal" sword?

  22. PREMILLENNIALISM HOW DOES THIS HELP US TO UNDERSTAND REVELATION 20:4? • It helps us to put it in the context of a highly symbolic book. • 17 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, "Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last.

  23. PREMILLENNIALISM HOW DOES THIS HELP US TO UNDERSTAND REVELATION 20:4? • It helps us to put it in the context of a highly symbolic book. • 18 "I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death. Were these "literal" keys?

  31. PREMILLENNIALISM HOW DOES THIS HELP US TO UNDERSTAND REVELATION 20:4? Also, compare Rev. 14:14-20 with Gen. 49:11 & Deut. 32:14. 14 Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and on the cloud sat One like the Son of Man, having on His head a golden crown, and in His hand a sharp sickle.

  32. PREMILLENNIALISM HOW DOES THIS HELP US TO UNDERSTAND REVELATION 20:4? Also, compare Rev. 14:14-20 with Gen. 49:11 & Deut. 32:14. 15 And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to Him who sat on the cloud, "Thrust in Your sickle and reap, for the time has come for You to reap, for the harvest of the earth is ripe."

  33. PREMILLENNIALISM HOW DOES THIS HELP US TO UNDERSTAND REVELATION 20:4? Also, compare Rev. 14:14-20 with Gen. 49:11 & Deut. 32:14. 16 So He who sat on the cloud thrust in His sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped. 17 Then another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.

  34. PREMILLENNIALISM HOW DOES THIS HELP US TO UNDERSTAND REVELATION 20:4? Also, compare Rev. 14:14-20 with Gen. 49:11 & Deut. 32:14. 18 And another angel came out from the altar, who had power over fire, and he cried with a loud cry to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, "Thrust in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for her grapes are fully ripe."

  35. PREMILLENNIALISM HOW DOES THIS HELP US TO UNDERSTAND REVELATION 20:4? Also, compare Rev. 14:14-20 with Gen. 49:11 & Deut. 32:14. 19 So the angel thrust his sickle into the earth and gathered the vine of the earth, and threw it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.

  36. PREMILLENNIALISM HOW DOES THIS HELP US TO UNDERSTAND REVELATION 20:4? Also, compare Rev. 14:14-20 with Gen. 49:11 & Deut. 32:14. 20 And the winepress was trampled outside the city, and blood came out of the winepress, up to the horses' bridles, for one thousand six hundred furlongs. (14:14-20) Was this human blood?

  37. PREMILLENNIALISM HOW DOES THIS HELP US TO UNDERSTAND REVELATION 20:4? Also, compare Rev. 14:14-20 with Gen. 49:11 & Deut. 32:14. 11 "Binding his donkey to the vine, And his donkey's colt to the choice vine, He washed his garments in wine, And his clothes in the blood of grapes." (Gen. 49:11)

  38. PREMILLENNIALISM HOW DOES THIS HELP US TO UNDERSTAND REVELATION 20:4? Also, compare Rev. 14:14-20 with Gen. 49:11 & Deut. 32:14. 14 "Curds from the cattle, and milk of the flock, With fat of lambs; And rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, With the choicest wheat; And you drank wine, the blood of the grapes." (Deut. 32:14)

  39. PREMILLENNIALISM HOW DOES THIS HELP US TO UNDERSTAND REVELATION 20:4? Also, compare Rev. 14:14-20 with Gen. 49:11 & Deut. 32:14. The "blood" flowing from the winepress is not human blood, but the "blood of the grapes" or grape juice. The amount of grape juice is a symbol of the magnitude of God's wrath, as it was then about to be poured out on the enemies of the cross.

  40. PREMILLENNIALISM THE BASIC PROBLEM OF DISPENSATIONAL PREMILLENNIALISM Its basic problem is that it denies what the Bible affirms: " When the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son." (Gal. 4:4) But, if Jesus' rejection by the Jews prevented Him from doing what He came to do, the time was not full. And, if the time was not full, Jesus was sent prematurely.

  41. PREMILLENNIALISM THE BASIC PROBLEM OF DISPENSATIONAL PREMILLENNIALISM While it is true that the Jews did reject Jesus, they rejected Him because He came to establish a spiritual kingdom, rather than a material one. 36 Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here." (John 18:36)

  42. PREMILLENNIALISM THE BASIC PROBLEM OF DISPENSATIONAL PREMILLENNIALISM As a matter of fact, they wanted a material, earthly kingdom, and they wanted Him to be their king, but HE REJECTED THEIR OFFER! 14 Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, "This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world."

  43. PREMILLENNIALISM THE BASIC PROBLEM OF DISPENSATIONAL PREMILLENNIALISM As a matter of fact, they wanted a material, earthly kingdom, and they wanted Him to be their king, but HE REJECTED THEIR OFFER! 15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone. (John 6:14-15)

  44. PREMILLENNIALISM THE BASIC PROBLEM OF DISPENSATIONAL PREMILLENNIALISM Remember, the Jews had wanted nothing more than a mere, earthly king over a material, earthly kingdom since the time of Samuel. 4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah,

  45. PREMILLENNIALISM THE BASIC PROBLEM OF DISPENSATIONAL PREMILLENNIALISM Remember, the Jews had wanted nothing more than a mere, earthly king over a material, earthly kingdom since the time of Samuel. 5 and said to him, "Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations."

  46. PREMILLENNIALISM THE BASIC PROBLEM OF DISPENSATIONAL PREMILLENNIALISM Remember, the Jews had wanted nothing more than a mere, earthly king over a material, earthly kingdom since the time of Samuel. 6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." So Samuel prayed to the Lord.

  47. PREMILLENNIALISM THE BASIC PROBLEM OF DISPENSATIONAL PREMILLENNIALISM Remember, the Jews had wanted nothing more than a mere, earthly king over a material, earthly kingdom since the time of Samuel. 7 And the Lord said to Samuel, "Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them." (1 Sam. 8:4-7)

  48. PREMILLENNIALISM OTHER PROBLEMS OF DISPENSATIONAL PREMILLENNIALISTS • They deny God's land promise to Abraham has been fulfilled. But consider Joshua 21:43-45. 43 So the Lord gave to Israel all the land of which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they took possession of it and dwelt in it.

  49. PREMILLENNIALISM OTHER PROBLEMS OF DISPENSATIONAL PREMILLENNIALISTS • They deny God's land promise to Abraham has been fulfilled. But consider Joshua 21:43-45. 44 The Lord gave them rest all around, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers. And not a man of all their enemies stood against them; the Lord delivered all their enemies into their hand.

  50. PREMILLENNIALISM OTHER PROBLEMS OF DISPENSATIONAL PREMILLENNIALISTS • They deny God's land promise to Abraham has been fulfilled. But consider Joshua 21:43-45. 45 Not a word failed of any good thing which the Lord had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.
