  1. Adultery & Divorce Causes and Possible Prevention Steve Wrathall Anthropology 174AW Prof D. White

  2. Introduction • “Men think about sex an average of 6 times an hour; that’s 750 times a week, not counting dreams. In contrast the average married couple has sex 1.5 times a week.” • Large amount of unsatisfied desires. • Has to be a way to better the situation so marriage does not end up in divorce with adultery as the main cause.

  3. Hypotheses • As frequency of sex during marriage goes up, frequency of divorce from adultery goes down. • The presence of premarital sex has a direct correlation on adultery as cause of divorce. • The age of women at time of marriage has an effect on rate of divorce from adultery.

  4. Variables Used • 1136--Infidelity: adultery divorce causes • 160--Sex frequency in marriage • 167--Frequency of premarital sex-female • 166--Frequency of premarital sex-male • 967--Age of women at establishment of marriage: first marriage • 200--Region

  5. Adultery and Frequency of Sex in Marriage • As sex during marriage increases, divorce from adultery decreases. • Possible Causes • When men get sex at home, less likely to look elsewhere. • Human/Biological needs satisfied. • Statistics • 92% of the cases studied when divorce stemmed from adultery occurred when there was some type of abstinence

  6. Crosstabs: Adultery and Frequency of Sex

  7. Adultery and Premarital Sex • When premarital sex is present, then rate of divorce from adultery goes up and vice versa. • Possible Causes • Relationship will not be blinded by sex • Shows that relationship will have something to fall back on when the sex dies out. • Statistics • 87% of cases studied showed that divorce from adultery occurred when there was premarital sex.

  8. Crosstabs: Adultery and Premarital Sex-Female

  9. Crosstabs: Adultery and Premarital Sex-Male

  10. Adultery and Age of Female at Time of Marriage • As the age of the woman increases, the rate of divorce from adultery decreases. • Possible Causes • People go through a time of change in their lives when they figure out who they are and what they want. • Women achieve sexual peak later in life thus causing them to want sex more. • Correlation with first premise.

  11. Crosstabs: Adultery and Age of Female at Time of Marriage

  12. Replication by Region • Found that the same results appeared for the most part across various regions of the world. • Some had a stronger correlation than others. • Some weaker correlations may be due to varying cultures and beliefs on divorce.

  13. Crosstabs: Adultery and Sex During Marriage by Region

  14. Crosstabs: Adultery and Premarital Sex by Region- F

  15. Crosstabs: Adultery and Premarital Sex by Region- M

  17. Conclusions • All three of my hypotheses were correct. • Formula for the perfect lasting relationship void of adultery and divorce. • High frequency of sex in marriage. • No premarital sex • Older (mature) woman when getting married.
