  5. Formulate a Plan Short term goals Re-evaluate frequently Modify as the student progresses. Collaboration is essential!!!

  6. Help is on the way! • Every effort will be made to support you • in class support from a teacher’s aide when possible • pre-teaching and re-teaching in the ESL classroom • additional resources • collaboration to modify assignments and curriculum

  7. What can I expect from this student? • Be on time for class • Bring regular supplies (pencil, notebook, text) • ATTEMPT to follow what others are doing • ATTEMPT to copy notes from the board • This may even be challenging as they are copying words that they do not even know • In some cases, they are learning a new alphabet

  8. How do I communicate? SMILE – it’s universal Speak slowly Use few words for face to face interactions Gestures Pictures Find a Buddy Wait time – at least 3 seconds Technology – Translation websites Another student who may speak the same language

  9. What are my responsibilities? • Comprehensible Input • Modify and Accommodate • reduce amount of work • decide on the most important concepts • Inclusion • keep student engaged with classroom activities • Replace assignments • Eliminate some assignments

  10. What can I do in my classroom? • Varied Activities • Visuals • Anything that you can show that will help them understand! • Gestures and Modeling • show – don’t tell • Graphic Organizers • Realia • fancy word for Props • Objects from real life used in the classroom

  11. Grading ELLs must be graded using the same grading system as all other students. Focus on the Process and not the Product Quality not Quantity Special grading rubric

  12. Enjoy! • Don’t stress • Seize opportunities to let them shine • Watch your other students interact • Encourage them to engage the new student
