  3. Animals In Research…. The fact that animals are being used in research is a big controversy. This is because animal activist believe every living thing should stand a chance and should not be used for experimenting. Also at the same time the decrease in U.S deaths from heart disease since the 60's have actually got supporters of animal research. The American heart association is specific about the animal research and must have requirements before funding animals to any and anything. They must be treated responsibly and humanely. The two requirements areTheir research can't be done without animals The experiments has to be designed to produce needed results and information

  4. ACUC… • All experiments or procedures involving vertebrate animals must be approved by the Animal Care and Use Committee. The forms are available at the Research and Sponsored Programs, which plans the activities of the Committee. Investigators should allow time for the Committee to review the paper work because no experminents or procedures can take place without the clearence of the (ACUC).

  5. Species Used…. • Rats, mice and other rodents: 90-95% • Dogs and cats: less than 1% • Non-human primates: less than 0.3%.

  7. Rabbits in Research • The similarity between the physiology of rabbits and humans makes the rabbit a good model for research into human disease

  8. Cats in Research Cats represent less than 1 percent of animals used in research each year. However, the contributions of these animals are extremely valuable. From research into the AIDS virus to discoveries about our nervous system, cats play a large role in researching human and animal diseases.

  9. Dogs In Research… • Dogs also represent less than 1 percent of animal models used in research. Their contributions to the various fields of medicine have been extremely valuable

  11. Animals in captivity • Animals that are held in captivity are held for many different reasons such as breeding them, doing testing on them for human purposes, and also economic purposes. Many zoologist state that today they hold there animals under captivity for reasons such as conservation, education, and science.

  12. Behavior of animals in captivity • Animals that are held in captivity don’t normally adapt to the “new environment” and develop a case of stereotypical behavior. This is when the animal starts to develop a repetitive and apparently purposeless behaviors. Zoo keepers try to decrease the chance of this by introducing something called environmental enrichment.

Aqua animals • Most marine animals are held for entertainment of humans and the HSUS believe its wrong because they are the animals groups are called “pods” which are most affected they mostly travel in packs or with there family. In the wild these animals only spend 10%-20% percent on the surface and in the Tanks spend more then half there time on the surface.
