  1. A Crisis in Confidence? The 1970s - Losing faith in the government and economy.

  2. 1968 Election • LBJ dropped out, RFK was assassinated, and Hubert Humphrey seemed the status quo. • George Wallace ran a segregationist platform. • Nixon won in the discontent of Vietnam and protest - “silent majority.”

  3. Expansion of the Civil Rights Movement • By the late 1960s other groups began to organize to push for civil rights. • Growth in Black nationalism by the 1960s led to similar movements for other non-white ethnic groups. • Women and gays also pushed for equal treatment.

  4. United Farm Workers • Migrant workers that were largely Mexican-American went on strike and boycotted farms in CA. • Cesar Chavez

  5. Chicano Movement • Push for pride in Mexican heritage. Created Mexican-American studies programs in college. • Student walkouts in LA.

  6. Native American Activism • Young activists teamed with traditionalists to push cultural pride. • Groups occupied Alcatraz Island, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and building at Wounded Knee to protest treatment. • Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act

  7. Feminism The Feminine Mystique - the American home was a “comfortable concentration camp” • NOW - pushed enforcemtn of anti-discrimination laws • Variety of focuses - anti-housewive, pro-abortion, equal treatment. • Roe v. Wade (1973) • Title IX • Gains in workplace and school.

  8. Equal Rights Amendment • To make men and women equal under the law. • Stop-ERA movement was successful in preventing ratification.

  9. Gay Liberation Movement • Gay Power - push for gay pride as well as an end to discrimination. • Create support to encourage people to “come out.”

  10. Nixon • Intensely private person, developed an isolated presidency. • Very paranoid of others…

  11. Detente • Nixon Doctrine - continue American aid, but don’t count on troops. • Détente - some cooperation with USSR though still a rivalry. Use diplomacy with USSR but curb revolution in the “third world.” • SALT agreement in 1972 with Brezhnev.

  12. Relations with China • Opened relations with China to put pressure on USSR. • China and US opened trade and agreed to limit expansion of USSR in Asia.

  13. Tricky Dick • Many govt. policies extended welfare programs, but also did so to eliminate “liberal bureaucracy.” • Tried to play appointments to Supreme Court for political purposes.

  14. Inflation • Deficit spending and war led to inflation, coupled with a recession, Nixon tried to lower spending = recession. …

  15. 1973 Oil Embargo • Attacks by Egypt and Syria on Israel were held off. • In response OPEC Arab members reduced oil production by 25% and raised prices - and put embargo on U.S. • Over the 1970s the price of oil increased impacting the US economy.

  16. Watergate • Paranoid about enemies - had reporters wiretapped. • Break in at DNC - connection between burglars and White House. • Cover-up led to WH officials fired and resigning. • Secret tapes were released and Congress voted to impeach, but Nixon resigned.

  17. Gerald Ford • One of his first acts was to pardon Nixon - very unpopular. • Issued tax cuts - spurred growth, but also increased deficits. • The “bumbling” president?

  18. Jimmy Carter the “Outsider” • Gov. of GA - no “Washington” experience, except he had no political philosophy. • Problems of reforming social welfare, energy policy, and hostage crisis.

  19. Stagflation • Growth in the economy had been the norm since WWII. • 1974 economy shrunk = unemployment and inflation went up. • By 1970s US had major economic competitors. Decrease in productivity and quality hurt businesses. • Manufacturing in US declined (NE cities) - tech industries of the Sunbelt thrived. Growth of service sector.

  20. Camp David Accord and Cold War • First mediated peace treaty between Israel and Arab nations. About Sinai and Palestinian people. • 1979 USSR invaded Afghanistan - US threatened war if USSR invaded Persian Gulf. • SALT II 1979

  21. Iran Hostage Crisis • 1979 anti-American Islamic Revolution in Iran. Mobs took Americans at US embassy hostage. • Diplomacy failed, rescue attempt failed.
