  1. How bad weather affects your shipment’s cargo As a business owner or logistics professional you would wish to keep your customers happy and satisfied but when it comes to transportation of freight, bad weather can take a toll. Severe weather can cause all kinds of shipping issues from delays to increased costs, which in turn will affect your business badly. It is therefore important to understand how weather affects freight shipment and here, we have mentioned common issues that result from bad weather: 1.Road conditions Flooding or too much snowfall accumulation on roads can cause road closures, owing to which the drivers will have to take an alternate route which could possibly extend the transit time. And while it is frustrating for all the parties involved, it’s dangerous for the truckers which means even the shipment is not safe. 2.Limited operational terminals Abnormal weather conditions may cause the freight terminals to operate in limited capacity which could mean that some shipments will go out but would be delayed. 3.Guaranteed and expedited shipping Expedited or guaranteed shipping services cost higher than usual. If you are doubtful about the weather conditions, it is better to not opt for expedited services as nothing is guaranteed when the weather is dangerous or bad and you will end up spending more than normal.

  2. 4.Power outages Much like other industries, power outages affect the shipping industry as well. Hurricanes, tornadoes, severe blizzards and other forms of extreme natural disasters take a toll on infrastructure, power lines, communication channels, etc. All of these damages make it difficult to get updates and statuses on your freight. Not just this, but if the gas station is in an impacted area, it becomes difficult for truckers to even fill up which creates a big mess. 5.Capacity limitations Bad weather can cause the trucks filled with undelivered freight to get stuck on the roads and so, fewer trucks would be available for picking up pending cargo. In other words, it will be difficult for shippers to find carriers with capacity to transport their typical freight volumes. These are some of the ways in which weather can impact, international ocean, air, and road based LTL and FTL freight transportation. And while problematic weather is inevitable, you can plan ahead and mitigate its effects. Alternatively, you can simply search for the right third-party logistics company (3PL) or fourth party logistics (4PL) and they will take care of the rest; though they might not be able to guarantee a fixed time of delivery, they are well equipped to tackle the situation to a great extent.
