  3. Mandatory Education TIDAL Waters • 13 through 15 may - • operate electric powered or • over 11 feet long powered less than 10 HP • 16 and older with NJ Boating Safety Certificate may - • may operate any powerboat • NON-TIDAL Waters • Boating LICENSE from Motor Vehicle Comm.

  4. Vessel Speed • Regulate speed to avoid danger to life or limb or damage to property • Reduce speed to slow when passing: • Marina, pier, dock or wharf closer than 200 ft • Work barges or floats engaged in construction • Through bridge openings 400 ft or less • Through lagoons, canals, or confined areas of less than 200 ft width • Vessels not under command • Emergency vessels w/flashing or rotating lights

  5. Personal Watercraft • No operation after sunset to sunrise • No operations in specified areas • At headway speed within 100 feet of: • Buoys or signs for swimming areas • Shoreline • Persons in the water • Residential dwellings In manner to cause leaving the water w/in 100 feet or another vessel

  6. Waterskiing • Waterskiing = any type of human towing • Keep at least 200 feet from wharf, marina, dock, pier, bridge, persons • Keep at least 100 feet from other boats, shore, ATONs or moorings • Must have competent observer • Tow line 35 to 75 feet • Sunrise to sunset only

  7. Waterskiing • Wear USCG Approved life jackets • Display orange triangular pennant at least FOUR feet above highest structure • When pulling or retrieving skier • While skier is in the water • While towline is in the water

  8. Homeland Security • Minimum speed within 500 yards of USN Ships / no closer than 100 yards • Avoid operating near military vessels, cruise ships, cruise liners and HAZMAT shipping vessels • Do not stop under bridges or in shipping channels • BE ALERT AND REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

  9. Marine Sanitation Devices • Installed toilets must have MSD • Know the no-discharge areas (NDA) • Secure toilets when in and NDA • Use the pump-out stations at marinas • No raw sewage in any waters • Have Toilet systems checked annually

  10. Environmental Protection • Pollution regulations effective 2014 • Placard required vessels greater than 26 ft

  11. Oil/Fuel Spills Spills reported immediately to US Coast Guard at 1-800-424-8802 Placard displayed for vessels >26’

  12. Diving/Snorkeling Flags Boaters remain 50 feet away from flag Divers with red w/white stripe flag No diving - narrow channels / marked fairway / under bridge / impede waters Come for the boating education … Stay for the friends

Boating Under the Influence (BUI) Not permitted to operate boat if BAC .08% or greater Penalties based on first offence or more, loss of boat operating privileges, and forfeiture of drivers license Boat operator privileges can be revoked for people who refuse a sobriety test when suspected of operating under the influence DON’T Drink and Boat!!!

  14. Accidents • Required by Federal Regulations, if involved in an accident, must render assistance, unless doing so will endanger his own vessel or passengers. Provide contact and registration information in writing to anyone injured or whose property was damaged • You CANNOT be held liable for any civil damages for any assistance rendered in good faith • If property damage in excess of $2000, injury or the death or disappearance of a person, you and the other operator are required to file a full description of the accident with the New Jersey State Police, Marine Law Enforcement • Forms provided by New Jersey State Police

  15. Protect Your Waters • New Jersey Invasive Species Strike Team http://www.njisst.org/ • Clean all Recreational Equipment while at ramp after using in any waters • Aquatic nuisance species can hitch a ride on our boats, trailers, and other items used in the water.

  16. Protect Your Waters Do not take the invasive species with you Regular cleaning of your boat, motor, and trailer before and after using all New Jersey waters can greatly reduce the spread of aquatic nuisance species.
