  1. CITIZENS: TRIED AND TRUEHonor Christ in Your BodyPhilippians 1:18-26

  2. Philippians 1:18-26 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again. (ESV)

  3. Why did Paul rejoice? > Two reasons: - Paul rejoiced because Christ is proclaimed (v. 18) 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice.

  4. Why did Paul rejoice? > Two reasons: - Paul rejoiced because Christ is proclaimed (v. 18) - Paul rejoiced because he knew he would be delivered (v. 19) Yes, and I will rejoice, 19 for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance,

  5. Why did Paul rejoice? > Two interpretations: -Unashamed before human judges - Release from prison -Unashamed before the Lord - Release from body – Vindication Job 13:15-18Though he slay me, I will hope in him; yet I will argue my ways to his face. 16 This will be my salvation, that the godless shall not come before him. 17 Keep listening to my words, and let my declaration be in your ears. 18 Behold, I have prepared my case; I know that I shall be in the right.

  6. Why did Paul rejoice? > Two agents: - Human – The Philippians’ prayers - Divine – The Holy Spirits help (assistance, provision)

  7. Why could Paul rejoice about his deliverance? 20 as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. It was a confident hope that through their prays and the help of the Holy Spirit that he would not be ashamed but have full courage to honor Christ in his body, whether by life or death.

  8. What was Paul’s single passion? Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. How do you honor Christ in your body? 21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

  9. To live is Christ 1. Christ is the motive for your actions - Glorify him 20 as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death.

  10. To live is Christ 1. Christ is the motive for your actions - Glorify him Paul’s single passion: Christ to be conspicuously and gloriously manifested. “honored” (megalyno) from (megas), “great”. Magnify is a good translation. NEB > “The greatness of Christ will shine out clearly in my person.”

  11. To live is Christ 1. Christ is the motive for your actions - Glorify him 1 Cor6:19-20Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 2 Thess1:11-12To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power, 12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  12. To live is Christ 1. Christ is the motive for your actions - Glorify him 2. Christ is the goal of your life - Love Him (v. 23) a. You desire to know him (3:8-14) Phil 3:8-14Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

  13. To live is Christ 1. Christ is the motive for your actions - Glorify him 2. Christ is the goal of your life - Love Him (v. 23) a. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  28. To die is gain 23 I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. 2 Corinthians 5:8 Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. John 21:18-19Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”
