Introduction • This PowerPoint is designed to help build a framework for success by organizing professional and career tasks/preparations that occur throughout residency • The layout of this PowerPoint is an interactive calendarthat will help one visualize their career development over their three year residency • By entering “Presentation Mode” in PowerPoint and preceding to the calendar slide, the calendar can be used to discover information and resources pertaining to each “event” by clicking on the text of the individual event • This will link to an informational slide about that topic

How to Login into the Wiki • This will be an extremely important resource throughout residency • To Login, go to: https://dp.ucsf.edu/idp/Authn/UserPassword • Login with your SF****** ID • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Wiki • Search for “UCSF Medicine Residency” • Go to “Tools” and click “Add Favourite” • UCSF Medicine Residency will now be under the Favouritetab in the user menu • Take some time to explore the Wiki! It is full of useful information for every year of residency

6. Educational Curriculum • To access UCSF Internal Medicine’s online Education Curriculum, Login to the Wiki and go to “Educational Curriculum” • Here you will find: • Teaching Files including: • Cardiology, Critical Care, General Medicine, Etc. • Intern Half Day Schedules • Resident Half-Day Schedules • Code Blue Simulation

7. Ambulatory Medicine • For more information and educational resources regarding Outpatient Medicine, Login to the Wiki and go to “Ambulatory Medicine – Clinics & Electives” • Here you will find: • Elective information • Intern information specific to each clinic site • The Knowledge Bank including: • Mayo Clinic Proceeding: Resident Clinic • JAMA: Rational Clinical Examination • Yale Curriculum

8. Meet Your CHEF Advisor • R1’s will receive an email after matching at UCSF with detailed information about the CHEF advisor program • All R1’s are expected to meet with their CHEF advisor between July and September of intern year and every 6 months thereafter • For more information on the CHEF program: • Login into the Wiki (see previous slide)  choose Housestaff Resources  CHEF Advising Program • Here you will find the most up-to-date information regarding the CHEF Advising Program as well as information regarding the following: • Research, Fellowship/Employment, Health and Well-Being, Evaluation and Feedback, and Diversity

9. DGIM Career Night • Held by Division of General Internal Medicine (DGIM) annually in October for housestaff • This is an opportunity to meet general internists from a variety of practices in the community including; physicians at Kaiser, hospitalists, community-based docs, private practice docs and more.  • There will be an email invite/reminder in September/October

10. Chief Resident Selection • Every year in May you will evaluate your colleagues for their chief resident candidacy!

11. AOD Pathway Night • Choosing an “Area of Distinction” or “Pathway” within our residency program is an opportunity to gain experience in a possible career path of Internal Medicine while in residency. There are currently five pathways: • Health Professions Education (HPE), Clinical Research Track – PRIME Program , Global Health, Health and Society and Molecular Medicine • An information session is held annually on the Pathways in December • Applications for each pathway are due in January of intern year (except Molecular Medicine) • For more information please visit: http://medicine.ucsf.edu/education/residency/program/distinction.html

12. Global Health Elective Night • Interested in doing an abroad elective? • If so, Login to the Wiki  choose Housestaff Resources  go to “Global Health Electives” • Annually, an information session is held in February and is geared towards R2’s • There will be an informational email prior to the event

13. PPD • A yearly PPD is required by hospital administration to continue training • An email reminder will be sent regarding the timing and location of PPD placement/reading

14. Contract Renewal • Each year your contract must be renewed • This typically occurs in February, at which time you will receive an email with all of the required documentation • Do the paperwork when you get it so you can continue working!

15. Identify Research/Fellowship Mentors • It is never to early to seek additional mentors in your area(s) of interest • Starting to identify possible career and/or research mentors during the second half on intern year will allow for preparation of a research project during your second year • Your CHEF advisor can help you identify mentors within your area(s) of interest • There are an abundance of resources for finding a mentor/research project at the following sites: • Login to to Wiki choose Housestaff Resources  click on “Research Projects & Mentors” • Here you will find research project and/or mentors in the following areas: Medical Education, Clinical Research, Basic Science and Quality & Safety

16. Fellowship Letter or Recommendation Writers • This can be a daunting task! But do not let it be. Identify a career/research mentors in your area of interest during the first half of your residency under the guidance of your CHEF advisor and use that mentor’s advice on whom to acquire fellowship letters from • You can always try to create a specific rotation or continuity clinic with someone in your field on interest to obtain a LOR

17. Applying to Fellowship • Our program has several resources to aid in the Fellowship Application process • A great starting place is the Wiki: • Login to the Wiki choose Housestaff Resources  go to “Applying for Fellowship” • Download the power point made by a former Chief Resident with information regarding: • Fellowship Application Timeline, Letter Writers, Personal Statements and Interviewing Tips • Two fellowship application informational sessionsare held for Medicine Residents annually • Held in March and May by email invitation • You should schedule a time in April/May of your fellowship application year to meet with Dr. Hollander for his letter of recommendation

18. USMLE Step 3 • USMLE Step 3 will need to be completed to obtain (not apply for) your California Medical License • Most UCSF Internal Medicine residents choose to take USMLE Step 3 during the end of R1 year into September of R2 year • Most residents feel that intern year helps them prepare for USMLE Step 3 • To find more information regarding Step 3 and reimbursement through the GME Office, visit the following sites: • Login to the Wiki choose Housestaff Resources  go to “Taking Step 3” • You will also receive a reminder email during intern year to sign up for USMLE Step 3 and information on reimbursement!

19. Fellowship Interviews and Jeopardy • Fellowship interviews typically occur August-October of R3 year • During R2 and R3 years you will be asked to participate in “Fellowship Jeopardy” • This system provides coverage for your colleagues’ clinical duties during their fellowship interviews • It is volunteer based and typically block (outpatient rotation) residents enroll

20. Fellowship Match • If you match into fellowship in a different state than California, you will need to apply for a license in that state!

21. Applying for California Medical License • There is information on the Wiki to help you apply for a California Medical License • Visit the following sites early in preparation of the Office of Graduate Medical Education Licensing Fairs which occur during August and September of R2 year • WikiHousestaff resources Getting you California Medical License • http://www.mbc.ca.gov/applicant/Index.html • Typically, the Office of GME will partially reimburse you for the application fees • You will receive an email regarding this • You need a California Medical License to be an R3! Do not put this off as it can take up to 9 months to process you application

22. In-Service Training Exam • An annual exam for Internal Medicine Residents during R2 and R3 years designed to help identify areas for improvement in a trainees medical knowledge • This examination takes place in October • You will receive and email regarding your exam and will be excused from your clinical duties for that day

23. ABIM Exam Signup • You will need to sign up for your Internal Medicine Board Exam during December/January of your R3 year • An email reminder with further instructions will be sent prior to the ABIM Exam signup window • Sign up early so you don’t have to pay “Late Fees!”

24. Exit Paperwork • Before graduating from the UCSF Internal Medicine Residency Program you will be asked to complete “Exit Paperwork” • Information pertaining to this will come towards the end of R3 year
