  2. George Washington Carver was one of the most important agricultural figures of the late 1800s and early 1900s. He was best know for his work with peanuts but also worked in other agricultural fields. WHO WAS GEORGE w. CARVER?

  3. Born: Diamond, Missouri Birthdate: 1864(exact date unknown) Family: Mother disappeared, raised by his slave owners Education: High School, Simpson College, Iowa State College. Taught at Iowa State and the Tuskegee Institute. Death: January 5, 1943. Age 79. Important information

  4. Born in Diamond, Missouri Had severe case of whooping cough as a child. Father died and mother was kidnapped. Became an orphan and a free slave when he was young. Was raised by his former slave owners. Became interested in learning. Could not attend school due to segregation. Traveled to the Midwest in search for education. History

  5. Supported himself with cooking, doing laundry, homesteading. Enrolled at Simpson College. Majored in Art. Moved to Iowa State to study Agriculture. Moved to Tuskegee Institute to teach by the invitation of Booker T. Washington. George’s studies centered around farmers utilizing available resources to replace expensive commodities. Worked with Cow Peas, Sweet Potatoes, and Peanuts, which fascinated him the most earning him the nickname “Peanut Man.” History(cont.)

  7. George encountered many obstacles in his life. They started from when he was a child seeking education. He could not attend school due to the fact that he was African-American. He encountered many instances where he was stereotyped and he worked hard to prove those people wrong. Obstacles

  8. Conclusion George Washington Carver was a man of simple background that shattered the barriers of his time. He helped people and made agricultural science simple and accessible to everyone. He was a great man in the eyes of many people. He was awarded many recognitions but he never wandered away from who he was. He contributed to modern agricultural science and will always be remembered as a great agricultural icon.
