  1. Big Ben By Andrea Serrano

  2. How was it built? • Big Ben was built by Messrs E.J. Dent, Co. Sir Charles Barry, Edward Pent, and Fredrick Pent. It was designed by Edmund Denison. It is 16 stories tall. The bottom 200 feet are made of brickwork and limestone. The rest is made of cast iron.

  3. Why was it built? The tower was built because the old palace of Westminster was destroyed by a devastating fire on October 16, 1834. In 1844, Parliament decided that the new building for the house of Parliament, by then under construction and design it was decided, it should have a clock.

  4. the clock • It is the largest in England. The clock’s face has a diameter of about 25 feet. The hour hand is 9 feet. The minute hand is 14 feet long. The clocks face is 180 feet above ground level.

  5. How sturdy is the clock? • it is well built. Even after the near House of Commons was destroyed by bombing during World War 2. the clock kept chiming. Although it is tilting. it has tilted an additional 0.9 mm each year since 2003.
