  1. Monthly News from Room 211 October 31st Our Month What’s Coming Up October has been a busy month. We completed Unit 2 in math. The class worked on rounding numbers to a variety of place values. We also learned to add, subtract, and multiply decimals. The Unit 2 assessment was given and we started Unit 3. The focus of the unit is geometry. In Science we continued to study energy. This month we learned about light, heat, and sound energy through a variety of experiments. Pre-Columbian Native American cultures was our focus in Social Studies this month. In addition to independent reading, we worked with non-fiction text. Students read newspaper articles about light, sound, and heat energy. A class read aloud, Morning Girl, was started to help review various reading strategies. We also worked on looking at character traits and finding evidence to support our views. We are using our knowledge of character traits to expand our own writing. As another writing project, we completed letters to our future selves. These letters will be put into a time capsule and opened at the end of the school year. In addition, we practiced responding to a prompt. In grammar, we reviewed adjectives and adverbs. Math – We will continue work on Unit 3. We will concentrate on angle measure and types of triangles. We will also review properties of polygons and learn about the sum of the angles in each type of polygon. The students will learn to make tessellations. Science – The end of unit assessment will be given at the beginning of the month. Prior to this, students will create study guides. We will also play a “millionaire” game to review for the test. Our next unit of study is a mini-unit, the solar system. Social Studies – The study of Native American cultures will complete early in the month. Next students will learn about early European exploration. Language Arts – We will start reading a novel, The Big Wave, in small groups. The children will use this story to examine plot. In grammar, we will review interjections and earn about prepositions.
