  1. Everything About FM 4910 Approved Plastic

  2. Introduction • Plastic materials can cause a substantial fire hazard in warehouses, shipping centres and the facilities they are manufactured in. • Compared to any other materials like wood or steel, some plastic materials may contain combustible materials and can lead many dry areas at risk. • So many organizations only use FM approved or specifically 4910 plastic material to reduce any structural damage or business interruptions. • Get safety and peace of mind you need while still enjoying the benefits of FM 4910 plastic materials that are lightweight and durable.

  3. Hazards • When working in industries, you never know about the hazards and any accidental fires that can occur due to usage of highly reactive gases and liquids. • Even the smallest mistake can lead to subsequent loss of products and even the smallest fire can: • Create a fire hazard. • Require immediate evacuation. • Contaminate the belongings.

  4. The solution for these hazards • So the only thing that is right in this situation, typically for the cleanrooms is to use fire retardant plastic materials. • The fire retardant plastics are both difficult to ignite and give off little to no smoke at all. • When specifying plastic materials for restroom piping, ducting, flooring, tanks and vessels, manufacturers and even users should look for and be aware of the materials tested in accordance with FM 4910 plastic standards.

  5. What is FM Approval? • FM approvals is introduced by international insurance carrier, FM global which is an independent testing arm and certification agency. • The organization uses scientific research and testing by employing evidence-based research to determine whether or not a given product can meet its high standards for safety, commercial and industrial loss prevention. • FM approval is only extended to fire-retardant plastics which can dramatically perform better and equal to any other conventional material when it comes to heat release.

  6. How a material is approved? • In order to become FM 4910 plastic approved, a plastic material must undergo comprehensive review and testing at a third-party site. • Once the product passes the test it gets a mark of being FM approved. • Though there are regular follow up and audits in the policy to ensure integrity and ensure that everything is maintained and standards are upheld at all times. • Once the material is FM-approved, it is suitable to be used in any facility where fire safety is on the top of priority lists.

  7. Scope of FM approval • The standards of the testing describe what is the minimum performance requirement of the materials which are intended to be used under different environments also depending on their application. • Moreover, it also evaluates the ability of the materials so that the fire spread can be limited along with the damage it causes. • It is necessary for the materials to meet the minimum specific requirements stated under this condition of performance. All the requirements for the following standard should be met for the materials to be acceptable. • FM approval focuses on encouraging the development and use of FM approved plastic material only which improves and advances property loss prevention practices.

  8. Tests carried out for approval • The very first thing that is carried out is an ignition test in which the material is exposed to various heat fluxes which are at the fixed amounts. The materials are observed and measured visually for any kind of vapor formations or sustained-ignition. • After being exposed to heat flux, the material is then taken for combustion testing, which is basically done to check flames, any release of gases like CO, CO2 or hydrocarbons and even sustained ignition. • Then at last, a fire propagation test is performed in which a large-scale fire environment is stimulated. This test is typically performed in the chamber of 40% oxygen. The purpose of this is to see if fire propagates by itself from the heat flux it is exposed to.
