Senior guidance activities • Senior Blitz: counselors meet with each senior • Transcript review (credits, grades, CS, HSPE) • Plans for next year • Senior classroom presentation • College application process and timelines • On-going help: letters of rec, monitoring grades • Check website for college visits and scholarship info

  3. College visits at BHSCheck the school website or the Counseling Center for frequent updates!

  4. Post-secondary plans • Two year community college • Four year public or private college • Other post-secondary training or “gap” year program

  5. 2 year community college application procedures Many CCs have priority application deadlines in the spring. For Bellevue College, it is May 18, 2013. • Complete the online admission application. SAT/ACT scores are not required. • Register to take a math and English placement exam. • Make an appointment to meet with an academic advisor. • Register for classes.

  6. 4 year public college application procedures • Submit online application (for UW and UC, transcribe classes/grades) • Student orders official paper transcripts from Counseling office and student mails one transcript to each college (first 3 are free and $5 for each add’l transcript) • Student asks testing agencies to send ACT/SAT score reports to colleges • No counselor/teacher letter of recommendation

  7. Private College Application Procedure • Counselor and teacher letter of rec are usually required. Submit background info to counselor at least three weeks prior to letter deadline. • Student requests an interview (if required). • Student asks testing agencies to send ACT/SAT score reports to colleges • Using the COMMON APPLICATION Clearinghouse? • Submit one application and a list of schools • “Invite” counselor and teachers to submit forms online and upload letters/transcript • Check college websites for supplemental materials • Non-common app private college applications? • Submit online application for each school • Give paper copies of school forms to counselor • Counselor will mail letter, forms and transcript to college • Same transcript fee structure as public college process

  9. What is SENDedu? Like the Common App, SENDedu provides for secure, online uploading of transcripts, letters of rec, etc. Used by some public and private colleges Students must “invite” the counselor and teachers in order for us to upload documents

  10.  Senior checklist • Stay focused on academics • Clean up Facebook account • Use an “appropriate” email address and monitor frequently • Retake SAT/ACT tests if needed and send scores to colleges • Student athletes? Register with the NCAA clearinghouse

Senior checklist • Select a range of schools (safe, realistic, reach) • Open an “account” for each college application • Draft essays/short answers • Common app? “Invite” counselor and teachers for letters of rec/forms • Attend upcoming events: • PNACAC College Fair on Saturday 11/3 (Seattle Convention Center) • College rep “visits” at BHS • Campus “senior preview” days • Submit applications and supporting materials well before deadlines!

  13. What are colleges looking for? • Rigorous classes, GPA, ACT/SAT test scores • Strength of senior year classes • Grade Trends • Initiative, motivation, self-discipline, persistence, ability to overcome hardships, strong work ethic, intellectual curiosity, creativity, special talents …

College Essay tips • Start essays early and get feedback. • Choose subject carefully- a turning point? • Consider your audience. • Humor does work! • Use the first person. • When sending the same essay to more than one school, make sure it has the correct university’s name on it! • Proffread, Proofreed, PROOFREAD! Ensure that essays are accurate

  15. Timelines …. When should public/private college applications be turned in? • Art/music portfolios? Check with the school • Early decision or early action? Usually November 1 • UW – December 1st deadline • Check each college website and back up two weeks • The earlier the better  What is the timeline in the spring? • FAFSA online January 1 • Mid year transcripts sent to private colleges after first semester • Colleges make selection decisions in April • Student commits to a college by May 1st • BHS sends final transcript to the student’s chosen college in July (no fee)
