All Singapore LRT Stations Will Have Route Maps Now Singapore, one of the most densely populated islands in the world, boasts an excellent modern transportation network that includes mass rapid transit, light rail networks, public buses, and taxis. Complementing the mass rapid transit (MRT) system are the two Light Rapid Transit (LRT) systems in Bukit Panjang, and Sengkang and Punggol. These light rail networks act as a feeder service that brings commuters closer to their homes. Recently, the Land Transport Authority announced that all LRT networks now have route maps. Rapid Transit System Maps and LRT route maps are currently on display at information panels located on all LRT stations. How these route maps will help commuters? The route maps indicate the current LRT station, as well as the previous and next stations. Commuters using the LRT system can easily view their current location in the LRT system and orientate themselves. LRT networks in Singapore will also feature locality maps to provide information about the surrounding area. LRT commuters can view these locality maps to know the roads and landmarks in the vicinity of each station. The LRT operators will update the locality on a regular basis so that they reflect new developments in the area. In terms of rail reliability, Bukit Panjang LRT, which is operated and managed by SMRT Corporation, performed well. The Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit (BPLRT) marked MKBF of more than 100,000 car-km. A global measure of rail reliability, MKBF registers the distance trains travel before a delay of at least five minutes. The longer the distance, the better the result. Commenting on the rail reliability, SMRT Chairman, Seah Moon Ming, said: “We kept our service standards up even as the pandemic raged. All our MRT lines and BPLRT clocked above 1 million train-km in mean kilometers between failures (MKBF).” SMRT is currently carrying out renewal works at BPLRT – Singapore’s first light rail system that opened in November 1999. By 2024, SMRT will complete renewal works for BPLRT. Simultaneously, SMRT appointed a new SMRT CEO - Mr. Ngien Hoon Ping with effect from 1 August 2022. The new SMRT CEO has rail engineering knowledge & expertise to help the transport operator achieve operational & business excellence and grow SMRT sustainably. Conclusion Transport operators and LTA will continue working together to improve the commuting experience. Installing route maps in all LRT stations is just one of the measures by which operators and LTA want to provide an excellent commenting experience to Singaporeans. Other upcoming projects include the rail expansion project, renewal of various aspects of the rail system, construction of the road and commuter infrastructure, electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, autonomous vehicles, and more.
